His tenure may had lasted only two matches but, in his short time in charge, Nazri Nasir had made his mark as the Singapore national team's caretaker coach.
Armed with a clear plan for attacking football, unshakeable belief in his men and inspiring team talks, the Lions (world ranking 165) punched above their weight and took Oman (world ranking 90) to penalties in last night's AirMarine Cup final in Kuala Lumpur.
They drew 1-1 in regulation time before losing 5-4 on penalties.
"I am so proud of the boys," he told The Sunday Times after the game, which saw goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud (swollen foot) rested and captain Hariss Harun (groin strain) start the game on the bench.
"There is nothing else I can ask for from them. They showed true character. At half-time (with Singapore trailing 1-0), I told them there are 45 minutes more. They can go out fighting or they can go out. They have nothing to lose. And looking at their reactions, I got the feeling that we will equalise."
The Omanis struck first at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in the 28th minute through Aziz Al Maqbali's header from midfielder Raed Saleh's cross.
But in the last minute of stoppage time, substitute striker Khairul Nizam was brought down outside the box and earned a free kick.
Several Lions crammed into Oman's wall to make space for Zulfahmi Arifin to place the ball into the top corner for his first international goal.
"Zul just picked his spot, he has a very natural left foot," said Nazri in praising the Hougang United midfielder.
However, with no extra-time in this friendly tournament, it was straight to penalties. There, Safuwan Baharudin, Yasir Hanapi, Amirul Adli and Hariss all netted but Faris Ramli, Singapore's fourth taker, crashed his effort against the bar while Erwin Koeman's men all converted.
The Lions reached the final after beating hosts Malaysia 1-0 on Wednesday while Oman thrashed Afghanistan 5-0.
In the day's earlier game, Malaysia defeated Afghanistan 2-1 to finish third in the quadrangular tournament.
And with the Football Association of Singapore set to announce its new national coach in June, Nazri hopes the new trainer can keep faith in the current lot.
He said: "Man-management is very important in football. If you can win the hearts of the players, you are easily one-up.
"I told the players - win or lose, I believe in you and I will take the blame.
"These boys fought all the way for me, they gave me 100 per cent."

Martial sustained a groin problem in the early stages of Solskjaer's first defeat in charge, but was able to carry on until half-time before being substituted.
England international Lingard pulled up with a hamstring injury towards the end of the first half.
United sorely missed both players after the break as PSG struck twice in quick succession through Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe to leave Solskjaer's side with a mountain to climb if they are to reach the last eight of the Champions League.

LONDON (AFP) - Jose Mourinho claims modern footballers have such fragile egos that one Manchester United player asked the Portuguese coach not to criticise him in front of his team-mates.
Mourinho was sacked by United in December after a wretched run of results fuelled by the disintegration of his relationship with several key players.
Publicly criticising United stars including Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw and feuding with others behind the scenes, Mourinho lost the dressing room and has since blamed the attitude of his squad for the fall-out.
On Saturday, Mourinho, speaking on beIN sport as a pundit for their coverage of Arsenal's clash with Chelsea, revealed he was stunned to be approached by an unnamed United player over his treatment of him.
"I had recently one of my players, I was just coaching them, and when I coach on the pitch I like to see myself free because I am in family and I want to be able to criticise everyone," Mourinho said.
"I had one player say, he was very polite and not confrontational, 'Please when you criticise me, can you do it in private?'.
"I said why and he said, 'Because it's my stature in front of the other players, when you criticise me I don't feel comfortable'.
"He was one of the top players of his generation. Nowadays you have to be very smart in the way you read your players and their personalities."
While former Chelsea boss Mourinho didn't name the player he was talking about in the incident, he did mention Stamford Bridge legend Didier Drogba as a prime example of a player who responded well to being criticised.
"Drogba was the kind of player who, with more pressure from the manager there was more quality in his performance," Mourinho said.
"He's a proper man, he's a competitive guy, he's a mature man, he's a man that everything in this life he has had to fight a lot for.
"There are some players that when you try to squeeze them they answer in the best way and then there are some players who have other mentalities and other personalities and of course their reaction is not the best.
"I had players brought in, in a different way who have an easy social life and an easier way of coming to the top of football. Some of them, they don't react in the same way."
Defending his United reign, which saw him win the League Cup and Europa League in his first season but go trophyless last term, Mourinho insisted his title rivals were given more backing in the transfer market.
Mourinho believes he deserved the same spending power enjoyed by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
"You have the case of Manchester City. In the first season, Guardiola was not a champion, it was really difficult and people were expecting a winning Manchester City," Mourinho said.
"In the first to the second season Pep made great decisions, but great decisions that were supported.
"In Liverpool, I think how many players were in Liverpool before Jurgen arrived?
"No Alisson (Becker), no (Virgil) Van Dijk, no (Andrew) Robertson, no (Mohamed) Salah, no (Roberto) Firmino, no (Sadio) Mane, no Fabinho, no (Georginio) Wijnaldum, no (Naby) Keita, so this is work in depth."

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool will spend Christmas on top of the Premier League after goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk earned them a 2-0 win at Wolves on Friday (Dec 21), opening up a four-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.
City can reduce that gap back to a point with a win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Saturday, but Juergen Klopp's side will enjoy their Christmas dinner perched in first place.
In driving rain, on a foul night at Molineux, Wolves began brightly, the promoted side showing why they are in seventh place and Moroccan midfielder Romain Saiss forced Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker into an early save.
But Liverpool grabbed the lead in the 18th minute with a beautifully-worked goal. After a clever exchange with Sadio Mane, Brazilian midfielder Fabinho's pull-back was exquisitely turned in off the outside of his foot by Salah.
Jonny and Matt Doherty both tested Alisson before the break, suggesting that Wolves were still very much in the game but it was the visitors who extended their lead in the 68th minute.
Salah drifted a ball into the box towards Van Dijk and the towering Dutch defender calmly slotted past Rui Patricio from close range.
That killed off Wolves although substitute Morgan Gibbs-White should have scored near the end after a slip-up from Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen will see a neurologist on Thursday (May 2) after suffering a horrific head injury during his side's Champions League semi-final defeat against Ajax.
Vertonghen was dazed and covered in blood following an accidental collision with Tottenham team-mate Toby Alderweireld in the first half on Tuesday.
The Belgium international initially tried to play on after being checked by Tottenham's medical staff, but he still looked groggy and had to be helped off the pitch moments later.
It was feared Vertonghen had suffered a concussion, raising questions about the decision to allow him to briefly resume play.
Vertonghen has shown no ill-effects since and tests so far have been all clear, but Tottenham revealed he will go for an additional examination with the specialist on Thursday.
"Jan Vertonghen has undergone further assessment today (Wednesday 1 May) after sustaining a head injury in last night's Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax. He also suffered a small cut to his nose that was bleeding heavily," a Tottenham statement said.
"Jan was immediately withdrawn as a result of the player informing medical staff that symptoms were developing suddenly and that he no longer felt stable standing up.

"Additionally, as is standard club policy with certain injuries, we shall also be seeking independent advice and Jan is due to see a neurologist, who specialises in elite athletes, tomorrow. The player has reported no ill-effects today."

BERLIN (AFP) - Franck Ribery appeared to respond to social media criticism of his eating a gold-coated steak with abusive posts on Instagram and Twitter on Saturday (Jan 5).
On Thursday, the 35-year-old France and Bayern Munich star had posted a video of a visit to a steak house owned by celebrity Turkish restauranteur Salt Bae and rubbing his hands before tucking into a huge chop coated in gold.
That ostentatious luxury drew ferocious criticism.
The messages on Ribery's official accounts were an angry response.
"Let's start with the envious, the angry, surely born because of a broken condom," read the first of the posts on Ribery's Twitter account.
"F*** your mothers, your grandmothers and your whole family tree," wrote Ribery, having taken care to sanitise the French word "n*quez".
"I owe you nothing, my success is above all thanks to God," the post continued.
"To me, to my relatives and to those who believed in me, for the others, you were only pebbles in my socks."
