Football: Struggling La Liga side Villarreal sack Luis Garcia after 50 days and a solitary win

MADRID (AFP) - Villarreal, without a victory in La Liga since the end of November, announced on Tuesday (Jan 29) that they have fired coach Luis Garcia after just 50 days at the helm.
"The club will announce the name of the new Villarreal CF manager in the coming hours," said the official website.
Luis Garcia replaced Javi Calleja on Dec 10. His only victory in any competition came three days later when Villarreal beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 at home to clinch first place in their Europa League group.
Since then, Villarreal have drawn four and lost two league games and been eliminated by Espanyol over two legs in the Copa del Rey, a run of eight matches without a victory.
The Yellow Submarine have sunk to 19th in the 20-team Liga and are five points away from safety. They are at home to Espanyol on Sunday and face Sporting Lisbon in the last 32 of the Europa League on Feb 14 and 21.
"The club would like to thank the manager for his hard work, dedication and professionalism, wishing him the best of luck throughout his sporting career," the website said, adding that Luis Garcia would say farewell at a press conference at the Villarreal training ground in the afternoon.

Fans hopeful and in awe after 'crazy' race

Fans hopeful and in awe after 'crazy' race

AARON KOK, 42, travel company owner (Liverpool fan for 31 years, been to Anfield 17 times)

Both set of results were expected but the pain is real.
Never before have I seen the pre-game crowd so boisterous. I could sense the anticipation, excitement and hope in the crowd, yet there was an air of tension and semi-resignation.
But it has been an amazing ride. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that we would have been involved in this crazy, intense race.

BENNETT CHIAM, 42, sales manager (Reds fan since 1989)

Being a fan for so long, I have been through the ups and downs with this club but I recognise progress. I believe Jurgen Klopp is the right man to bring us forward.
When the match ended, we sang "We Shall Not Be Moved" so loud because we believe in a very bright future for our club.
Perhaps our elusive 19th (title) will come next season. With Klopp, nothing is impossible.

HARISS HARUN, 28, Singapore and Johor Darul Ta'zim captain (Liverpool fan)

You would think 97 points should be enough to land the title, but Manchester City were almost perfect.
Still, as a Liverpool fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the season even though we didn't win the EPL title.
The team just kept going until the end and that was very pleasing as a fan. Hopefully, we can build on this to win the league next season.

KHAIRUL AMRI, 34, Singapore and Felda United striker (Manchester City fan)

I am more of a Pep Guardiola fan and he has proved to be the difference this season.
He has instilled this strong mentality in his players who have stepped up when required.
His squad rotation has been spot on... they are mostly in control for large parts of the games, and are also able to win them.
They now have this winning aura about them.

LONDON • The silence that greeted Manchester United's dire 1-1 draw with relegated Huddersfield was a powerful, voiceless protest that underlined why they need a clear-out in the dressing room and a change of culture in the boardroom.
When the players were needed to fight for the right to play Champions League football, they froze.
When United played with belief and pace to overwhelm Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on March 6 to reach the quarter-finals, all appeared well.
They have won only twice in 11 games since, and Sunday's collapse and failure to secure a top-four spot places substantial question marks against their character.
Paul Pogba is the key because when in the mood, the World Cup winner can impose his sumptuous skills to match-winning effect.
But, when the France midfielder is not in the mood, on or off the pitch, he can drag everyone down.
So Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a decision to make - convince Pogba to deliver excellence more consistently, or cut his losses and sell him to suitors Real Madrid.
Such is his undeniable talent that the United manager would clearly prefer him to stay, but only if fully committed. Suitable replacements will be hard to find, though, especially as United cannot offer Champions League football.

Yet one thing is for sure - the squad will be culled in the summer.
In the aftermath of the game at the John Smith's Stadium, Solskjaer said: "I can't talk about individuals now, but there's a chance you've seen the last of players. There's always a chance, but I would not say that about any individual."
The appointment of a director of football in the close season should help him to identify viable targets as the club embarks on the overhaul process, with Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian all set to leave.
However, it remains to be seen how much time and resources the Norwegian will be given to revamp the squad in his own image, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp already predicting "the scale of the job could be too big for him".
He told the Daily Mail: "Solskjaer has been entrusted with one of the biggest brands in world sport.
"Regardless of the size of the task at hand, he will be under immense pressure should United be several points off the pace and languishing in sixth place again come October."

(REUTERS) - West Ham are investigating allegations of racist abuse directed towards Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah during Monday's (Feb 4) 1-1 English Premier League draw at the London Stadium.
A video emerged on social media in which audible racial slurs are directed at the 26-year-old Egypt international as he was taking a corner.
The user who posted the video on Twitter said: "I went to watch West Ham vs Liverpool and I was disgusted by what I was hearing. People like this deserve no place in our society let alone football matches."
The Metropolitan Police told Reuters in an e-mail that officers are in the process of reviewing the footage.
In a statement, a West Ham spokesman said the club have a "zero tolerance policy" to any form of violent or abusive behaviour.
"We are an inclusive football club. Regardless of age, race, religion or belief, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or disability, everyone is warmly welcomed at London Stadium," he added.
"Anyone identified committing an offence will have their details passed to the police and will face a lifetime ban from London Stadium. There is no place for this kind of behaviour at our stadium."

Football: Suarez, Messi late-show sinks Atletico; Barca go 11 points clear in title race

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Barcelona closed in on the La Liga title after beating 10-man Atletico Madrid 2-0 in Saturday's (April 6) top-of-the-table showdown at the Nou Camp as late strikes by Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi gave the Catalans an 11-point lead at the top of the table.
Atletico began brightly but their gameplan went out of the window when Diego Costa was shown a straight red card in the 28th minute for a verbal tirade at referee Jesus Gil Manzano.
Atletico produced a gutsy second-half display, expertly shackling Barca, but the Catalans finally found a way past the visitors' outstanding goalkeeper Jan Oblak with a superb curling shot from Suarez in the 85th minute.
Moments later Messi sealed victory and quite probably the league title with an irresistibly cool finish into the net and Barca's fans jubilantly chanted "champions", crowing at their surely unassailable lead at the top with seven games remaining.
Atletico realistically needed to win at the Nou Camp for the first time since 2006 to stay in the title race and they played with ambition and intelligence in the opening stages, keeping the ball for long periods and depriving Barca of space.
But they were rocked by Costa's moment of madness which killed their early momentum and left them with little choice but to defend for the remaining hour of the game.
Striker Costa reacted angrily to not being awarded a foul after being tackled by Jordi Alba and gave a long verbal response to the referee, who to his disbelief pulled out a red card.
Costa had to be shepherded off the pitch by Barca's Gerard Pique as he struggled to control his temper while his team mates Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez earned bookings for venting their anger over the decision.
Atletico coped superbly with the setback and numerical disadvantage, controlling the space for the majority of the game.
Messi still carved his way through the middle of the pitch on two occasions, creating openings for Suarez and himself but both South American forwards were thwarted by the titanic presence of Oblak.
Atletico naturally had limited opportunities down the other end but were not far from finding a goal when Antoine Griezmann picked out Rodrigo from a free kick but the midfielder headed over the bar when Gimenez was stood behind him, in a better position.
Diego Simeone's side could not last the distance, however, and as their legs inevitably tired, Barca's attacking quality made the difference.

Football: Gordon Banks' illustrious career extended beyond

Bournemouth introduced top scorer Callum Wilson from the bench but his best chance was deflected for a corner and the victory, which leaves Wolves seventh in the table, was sealed by Cavaleiro with a cool finish in injury time. The game was the first ever top-flight clash between the clubs.

Football: Chelsea appeal to CAS against Fifa transfer ban covering two windows

(REUTERS) - English Premier League side Chelsea have filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a transfer ban imposed by world football governing body Fifa, the CAS said on Friday (June 7).
The Europa League champions were sanctioned in February for breaching rules regarding the international transfer and registration of players under 18. They were also fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$825,160).
The transfer ban prevents Chelsea from signing players in the close season and in the January transfer window in 2020 and CAS said it had registered the club's appeal, which could be considered just by written submissions.
"Following the hearing, if one is held... the panel deliberates and then issues its decision in the form of an Arbitral Award," the CAS statement read.
"It is not possible to say at this time when the Arbitral Award will be issued."
Chelsea had initially appealed against Fifa's ban in April and Fifa's Appeal Committee partially upheld the appeal, allowing the London club to register youth players during the period.
The club refuted Fifa's findings and had said last month they would appeal against the decision to the CAS.

The CAS also said it would not provide any more information on the matter until the panel came to a decision.

Football: EPL bottom team Huddersfield condemn racist abuse of Philip Billing on social media

LONDON (AFP) - Huddersfield Town have condemned the racist abuse of midfielder Philip Billing, with the English Premier League strugglers saying they have reported the incident to the police.
The 22-year-old received online racial abuse late on Tuesday (March 12) from someone claiming to be one of the Yorkshire club's fans.
"We're aware of the racist message sent to Philip Billing over social media on Tuesday evening and have subsequently referred the case to West Yorkshire Police," said a Huddersfield statement issued on Wednesday.
"Huddersfield Town does not tolerate abuse of any kind and has a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of discrimination.
"We will give our full cooperation to the police to deal with this matter in the strongest possible way."
Denmark Under-21 international Billing responded by retweeting the message from the fan with a thumbs down emoji.
The midfielder has been one of the Terriers' better players this season but went off at half-time during last Saturday's home defeat by Bournemouth, amid speculation linking him with a move to another Premier League club at the end of the season.
The midfielder has produced several outstanding displays for the Terriers this season.
Town manager Jan Siewert said after the match he was unsure whether Billing was carrying an injury or not.
Saturday's loss saw bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield slump to a 15th defeat in 17 league games and they are 16 points from safety with eight matches remaining.

Football: Ozil leads five-star Arsenal past Bournemouth

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil made the most of being handed a rare start by Arsenal boss Unai Emery as the German masterminded a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday (Feb 27) to keep the Gunners in pole position for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Ozil opened the scoring after just four minutes before turning provider for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to double Arsenal's lead.
Lys Mousset briefly gave Bournemouth hope before half-time, but Ozil and Mkhitaryan combined once more to tee up Laurent Koscielny to make it 3-1 before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette rounded off an eighth straight Premier League win at the Emirates for Emery's men.
The Spanish coach has been reluctant to use Arsenal's highest earner in his debut season in charge as Ozil was making just his second league start of the year.
However, the former Real Madrid midfielder showed why Arsenal handed him a contract worth a reported £350,000 a week last January by rolling back the years as the link-up between him and Mkhitaryan questioned why they had not started together in the Premier League since November.
Emery now has a welcome selection headache for Saturday's crucial north London derby away to Tottenham on whether to stick with Ozil and Mkhitaryan, while Aubameyang and Lacazette are also in top form and vying for a place up front.
Arsenal were helped along the way by some feeble Bournemouth defending as the Cherries succumbed to a 10 consecutive away defeat.
Artur Boruc should have got a stronger hand to Ozil's shot that bounced over the Polish goalkeeper to give the hosts a perfect start.
At the other end, Arsenal's own defensive deficiencies were also on show at times as only a fine save from Bernd Leno denied Ryan Fraser an equaliser before Dan Gosling's follow-up effort was bravely blocked by Matteo Guendouzi.
Bournemouth caused their own problems again in the build-up to Arsenal's second as Adam Smith gifted possession to Mkhitaryan, but it was still brilliantly pounced upon as the Armenian exchanged passes with Ozil before slotting into an empty net.
A hint of complacency cost Arsenal moments later when Guendouzi was caught in possession on the edge of his own box by Gosling and he squared for Mousset to roll into an empty net.
However, Arsenal clicked through the gears after the break and put the game to bed before the hour mark.
The Ozil-Mkhitaryan connection again opened up Bournemouth down Arsenal's right and Mkhitaryan picked out Koscielny, whose shot deflected in off Nathan Ake.
Mkhitaryan was the creator again for the fourth when his through ball freed Aubameyang in behind the Bournemouth defence and the Gabon striker stayed cool to round Boruc and slot home his 19th goal of the season.
A start for Aubameyang meant Lacazette had to settle for a place on the bench, but the French international still had time to add his 14th of the campaign with a brilliant free-kick 12 minutes from time.

Football: Jurgen Klopp defends changes as Wolves dump Liverpool out of FA Cup

WOLVERHAMPTON, UNITED KINGDOM (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes an early injury to defender Dejan Lovren highlighted why he chose to name a second-string side in bowing out of the FA Cup 2-1 to Wolves on Monday (Tuesday morning, Singapore time).
Klopp made nine changes to the side that lost for the first time in the Premier League this season to Manchester City last Thursday, with Lovren one of only two players to retain their place.
However, the Croatian pulled up with a hamstring injury after just six minutes and was replaced by 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever.
"Hamstring, is what I heard - without any signs before," said Klopp on what forced Lovren off. "I asked everybody, no signs, nothing, just out of the blue, so that's the decision you have to make.
"I am not sure what you all would have said if immediately from the beginning if our centre-half situation was Fabinho and Ki-Jana; then probably a few very smart people would tell me that I don't respect the competition or whatever."
Goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves either side of half-time sent the hosts into round four, where they will face Shrewsbury or Stoke City, despite Divock Origi's fine strike briefly bringing Liverpool level after the break.
Hoever's introduction meant Liverpool fielded three teenagers for the majority of the match with Rafael Camacho and Curtis Jones also handed debuts.
However it was the visitors' most experienced player, Milner, who was at fault for the opening goal when Diogo Jota caught the former England international in possession in midfield and put Jimenez clean through for the Mexican to score his seventh goal of the season.
Without Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, Liverpool were struggling to get any momentum going forward.
But the visitors were level out of nothing when Origi collected a loose ball on the edge of the area six minutes into the second period and smashed the ball high past John Ruddy.
Wolves, though, have made a habit of upsetting the Premier League's established top six in their first season back in the top flight.
After beating Chelsea and Tottenham and holding City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League, Liverpool can now be added to the list of scalps for Nuno Espirito Santo's side thanks to a wonder strike from Neves.
"He has talent, he has done it before and we encourage him to shoot from range," said Wolves boss Santo. "It was a good strike."
Only a brilliant save from Ruddy denied Xherdan Shaqiri a stunning equaliser and Liverpool a replay as the Swiss's free-kick was touched onto the inside of the post by the Wolves goalkeeper.
Klopp had a final roll of the dice by throwing on Salah and Firmino for the final 20 minutes, but even their firepower failed to spark a fightback and Klopp's team selection will now be seriously questioned as he is still to deliver a trophy in his four seasons in charge.
However, with Liverpool still in pole position to deliver a first league title in 29 years, the German coach defended his selection to minimise the chance of his stars suffering injuries.
"We played a similar line-up and had three tough games in the last couple of weeks, so it was clear we had to change," Klopp added after a run of four Premier League games in 13 days over the festive period.
"The intensity of the last few games gave me the information it was not possible to start with these three up front. Only Dejan played a lot of games in the last three or four weeks, pretty much all the games...He played today and was injured."

Football: Guardiola salutes 'incredible' Man City

LONDON (AFP) - Pep Guardiola hailed his "incredible" Manchester City stars as they swept back to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Fulham on Saturday (March 30).
First half goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero moved Guardiola's side one point clear of previous leaders Liverpool.
It was a confident display from City in the west London sunshine and Guardiola was impressed with the rhythm his team showed after the two-week international break.
"Our first 15-20 minutes was one of the best of the season. We played with incredible spirit, we could have scored more. After the goals we controlled it," he said.
"It was an incredible result after the international break and having played away. We did what we should do.
"After the break playing at home is different to playing away. Always you have doubts about how they're going to react.
"Fulham was a tough game for Liverpool and Chelsea so we knew it was going to be tricky, 12.30 on Saturday, a sunny day.
"That is unusual and that is why I am so satisfied."

Although Liverpool would regain pole position if they beat Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday, City have a game in hand and will be crowned champions for the second successive season if they win their last seven matches.
Guardiola isn't thinking that far ahead just yet and he urged his players to take it one game at a time.
"Liverpool and Man City have done incredible so far so deserve the credit. We will have 80 points with six games to play if we win next week," he said.
"We are going to do everything to win. No matter the next competition, we will win the game."
City, who have already won the League Cup, remain in contention for an unprecedented quadruple as they chase Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup glory.
But Guardiola said: "We don't think too much about what people say about the quadruple. Enjoy the moment and dream to win another game."

Football: Porto go through in Champions League with extra time VAR penalty

PORTO (REUTERS) - Porto converted a penalty awarded following a VAR review three minutes from the end of extra time to beat AS Roma 3-1 and reach the Champions League quarter-finals after an epic finale on Wednesday (March 6).
Fernando went down as he tried to meet Maxi Pereira’s low shot across the face of the goal and, after studying the pitchside monitor, the referee judged that his shirt had been tugged by Alessandro Florenzi.
Alex Telles emphatically converted the spot-kick to give Porto a 4-3 aggregate win in the round of 16 tie and heap further pressure on Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco, who Italian media said before the match was fighting to keep his job.
Shortly afterwards, Roma also thought they had won a penalty when the referee stopped the game while the video assistant looked for a possible push by Moussa Marega on Patrik Schick but play was waved on, this time without a pitchside review.
“The VAR is there and he didn’t even go and look at it,” said Roma defender Kostas Manolas. “For me, it’s a disgrace – the contact was clear. I don’t understand why these things always happen to us.” Italian media said Di Francesco would not speak to the media and had “isolated himself” on the team bus.
Porto defender Pepe will miss the quarter-final first leg through suspension after being booked following a clash with Edin Dzeko. The pair pressed their foreheads against each other and the Roma forward than fell over backwards.
Dzeko was also yellow-carded for the farcical incident.
Porto quickly took control and it was no surprise when they went ahead in the 26th minute.
Marega won possession, exchanged passes with Jesus Corona and slipped the ball inside for Tiquinho Soares, a Brazilian journeyman playing at his 14th professional club, to turn in from point-blank range.
Roma, however, equalised from out of the blue, helped by a schoolboy error from Eder Militao who stuck out a leg as Diego Perotti cut inside him and held his head in despair as the referee pointed to the spot.
Daniele De Rossi produced a stuttering run-up and nonchalantly sent Iker Casillas the wrong way for his first goal of the season.
Yet, after De Rossi went off injured, Porto regained control and were back in front seven minutes after the break.
Corona crossed from the left and Marega easily got away from his marker and side-footed the ball into the roof of the net from two metres to level the aggregate score at 3-3.
Roma wasted a glorious chance before the end of normal time when Pepe sent the ball straight to Perotti, but he shot high and wide from inside the penalty area.
Dzeko also missed two chances shortly before Porto’s penalty, leaving the Serie A side with only themselves to blame.
“We’ve got to accept it, even if the way it happened is terrible to take,” said De Rossi. “We didn’t deserve to go out.”

Lions line up 2 friendlies, to get new coach Yoshida soon

After a seven-month wait, the Lions will play at the National Stadium again, and also welcome a new ringmaster.
The Straits Times understands that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) will unveil Tatsuma Yoshida as the new national coach this week, after announcing yesterday two international friendlies against Solomon Islands on June 8 and Myanmar on June 11.
The national football coach position has been vacant since Fandi Ahmad's interim stint ended following Singapore's group-stage elimination at the AFF Suzuki Cup last November.
The Lions last played at the Sports Hub in a 6-1 group-stage win over Timor-Leste in that tournament. Former international Nazri Nasir led the team as caretaker in their international friendlies in March.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "The upcoming international window is a vital period for the national team to gather for centralised training and friendly matches, especially for the overseas players.
"The two friendlies will help the team build momentum from the positive performances in the last international window. In addition, these matches will also aid the team in their preparations for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers which will be played later this year."
The Lions acquitted themselves well in their last two friendlies at the Airmarine Cup in Malaysia, where they beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before a penalty shoot-out defeat in March.
Yazeen added: "We made a deliberate attempt to schedule the June matches at the Home of the Lions in order for our fans to be able to support and rally the Lions at our very own National Stadium.
"We are also thankful to have the support of our venue partner, the Singapore Sports Hub, who made it possible for the friendlies to be played at the Home of the Lions."
While world No. 139 Solomon Islands and Myanmar (140th) are hardly glamour teams, they represent decent opponents Singapore (160th) have a realistic chance to get a positive result against.
A win or a draw would add Fifa ranking points as the Lions bid to squeeze into the top 32 Asian teams - they are currently 33rd - and move up from the fifth pot into the fourth pot, for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
National skipper Hariss Harun said: "The new coach will have his own ideas and the faster the players can adapt, the better it will be for the national team, and we are looking forward to working with him."
In February, ST had revealed Yoshida as the front runner for the national coach position. The Chiba native was a central midfielder and started his playing career with hometown club Kashiwa Reysol before turning out for Kyoto Sanga and Montedio Yamagata.
In 2002, he signed for Jurong FC and played under former Singapore coach V. Sundram Moorthy, then player-coach for the Cobras.
After hanging up his boots that year, Yoshida returned to Reysol, where he rose through the ranks from youth-team coach to technical director and then head coach.
Although he lasted just one season each as head coach of Reysol (2015) and Albirex Niigata (2016), and was also sacked by Ventforet Kofu last year, it was his youth development work that impressed the FAS as he helped produce some Japan internationals such as Marseille right-back Hiroki Sakai.

Football: Koreans urge 'Monster' Kim to choose Watford over Beijing

ABU DHABI (AFP) - South Korea defender Kim Min-jae's goal-scoring exploits at the Asian Cup have not gone unnoticed overseas, but teammates are urging him to follow Son Heung-min to England rather than go to China.
The 22-year-old centre-back, nicknamed "Monster", has burnished his reputation as one of the region's hottest prospects, scoring twice and proving formidable at the back as South Korea reached the quarter-finals.
Baek Sung-kwon, general manager of his current club Jeonbuk Motors, confirmed a bid from Premier League club Watford which is reported to be around US$8 million (S$10.9 million).
Beijing Guoan, who finished the 2018 Chinese Super League season in fourth, are also in the hunt but so far, Kim is keeping his cards close to his chest.
"Until now, I want to focus only on the Asian Cup," he said on Thursday (Jan 24).
"I just want to talk about getting good results and so, at the moment, I haven't got anything to say about (a transfer).
"I just want to focus on helping the team not concede any goals."
Kim is already an established international, but missed the 2018 World Cup through injury.
A move to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League proved the making of Kim's celebrated teammate Son, while Ki Sung-yueng and ex-Manchester United star Park Ji-sung have also prospered in England.
And while Kim may be staying silent, his Chinese-based teammates at the Asian Cup have been happy to give their advice - and they are urging him to take the plunge in England.
"If Min-jae has big ambitions then it will be better for him to play on a bigger stage," said his central defence partner Kim Young-gwon, who has won two Asian Champions League titles and six Chinese championships with China's Guangzhou Evergrande.
"Of course, China is good but I think it would be better for him to play on the bigger stage that is Europe."
Kwon Kyung-won, who also plays in the Chinese Super League for Tianjin, gave similar advice.
"I thought that he was going to China but then I heard good news and I hope he can make the better choice," said Kwon.
The players were repeating the sentiment expressed on social media back in Korea as fans urged Kim, whose nickname stems from his powerful physique, to choose England.
Since moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, Son has turned into a global star, becoming the highest-scoring Asian player in Premier League history and also shining in the Champions League.
However, the Chinese Super League is also attractive to Asian players because of its high wages and proximity to home.
