Football: Kane and Lloris rescue point for Spurs against Arsenal

LONDON (REUTERS) - Hugo Lloris saved Pierre-Emerick Aubameyangâ€™s 90th-minute penalty to secure what could prove to be a vital 1-1 draw for Tottenham Hotspur in a scrappy north London derby against Arsenal on Saturday (March 2).
Third-placed Tottenham had trailed to Aaron Ramseyâ€™s 16th-minute goal and were offering little as a third consecutive Premier League defeat loomed in the early kickoff at Wembley.
Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot in the 74th minute to the relief of the home fans but when Davinson Sanchez conceded a penalty in the 90th minute Arsenal were poised to move to within a point of their arch-rivals having trailed by 10 a week ago.
Substitute Aubameyang, who had tumbled easily under a clumsy Sanchez challenge, struck his kick weakly and Lloris, at fault for both goals in Tottenhamâ€™s 2-0 defeat by Chelsea in midweek, plunged down to his right to save.
A niggly second-half ended in chaotic fashion with Arsenalâ€™s other substitute Lucas Torreira being red-carded for a high tackle on Danny Rose who had earlier been booked for catching Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno with his studs.
Third-placed Tottenham had not drawn any of their 28 Premier League games this season but ending that sequence and avoiding a damaging defeat was a huge relief as they retained a four-point cushion over Arsenal.
Llorisâ€™ save preserved Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettinoâ€™s record of never having lost three successive Premier League games since taking over and meant he is still to lose a home north London league derby.
â€œYes Llorisâ€™ save was a massive present,â€ Pochettino, celebrating his 47th birthday, said.

SPURS STUNNEDÂ

Tottenham were slightly shading the derby early on but were stunned after 16 minutes when Juventus-bound midfielder Ramsey, playing for the last time in the fixture, put his side ahead.
Sanchez made a hash of dealing with a long ball on the halfway line and Alexandre Lacazette released Ramsey into acres of space before the Welshman outpaced Victor Wanyama and took the ball around Lloris before sliding home.
Kane had a header ruled out for offside and Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno made a remarkable double-save just before the interval, blocking Christian Eriksenâ€™s close-range volley with his legs, then palming away Moussa Sissokoâ€™s follow-up.
Tottenham lacked quality in the final third in the second half and Lacazette should have doubled Arsenalâ€™s lead when he sliced wide from in front of goal.
Substitute Erik Lamela sent a left-footer just wide at the other end and his deep cross was chested down by Rose who caught Leno in the chest as he lunged to try and poke home.
Tottenham were running out of ideas but were given a reprieve when Shkodran Mustafi was adjudged by referee Anthony Taylor to have barged Kane over and the England captain drilled his penalty low into the corner.
To make matters worse for Arsenal, replays showed Kane was marginally offside in the build-up.
Tottenham might have been expected to go on and win the game after that but it was Arsenal who finished strongly and will rue not securing a huge victory in the battle for a top-four finish.

The 27-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star recognized that damaging the same metatarsal he hurt in February 2018, necessitating an operation, was serious.
"It's more complicated. The first time I hurt myself I said, 'I'll have an operation, it has to be fixed as quickly as possible'. I wasn't sad," he told Globo TV.
"This time, I took it harder. I cried for two days at home."
The injury sustained in a French Cup win over Strasbourg on Jan 23 has sidelined the Brazilian forward for 10 weeks.
PSG hope he will be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final in April.
This time, the club's medical staff have decided on conservative treatment of the fracture rather than another operation.
Last year, Neymar was laid up for three months after surgery, returning just in time to play in the World Cup in less than stellar form.

SINGAPORE - Former Football Association of Singapore (FAS) general secretary Winston Lee has been appointed by the Asean Football Federation (AFF) as its new General Secretary.
It is understood that the 54-year-old's contract is for an initial two years.
In a statement released on Friday (May 31), AFF president Khiev Sameth said: "Having distinguished himself over the past 20 years in his various senior management roles, Winston is recognised by the international football community as one of the most capable and far-sighted football leaders of his generation.
"Given his extensive football industry experience, strategic vision and proven record of performance, Winston is the ideal person to bring the AFF to a new level in the coming years.
"Winston is well versed with the evolution facing the football industry and, under his leadership, the AFF will be well-positioned to capitalise on the huge market in Asean and do more for football in this region."
As AFF general secretary, Lee's job scope is to oversee and support the football development of its 12 member associations, and grow the AFF in terms of business and operations.
Lee thanked his predecessor Azzuddin Ahmad for the "strong foundation" he had built over the years, and said: "I am honoured to have been appointed by AFF, and I look forward to driving the development of our corporate strategy to position AFF for stronger growth and continued success.
"The football industry is going through a period of transformation and we need to continue to embrace changes for us to remain relevant. My focus and priority for now is to chart our strategic direction, streamline our operations and accelerate our transformation."
Prior to this appointment, Lee had been a Fifa committee member and consultant, Asian Football Confederation vice-president and executive committee member, in addition to his role at FAS.
However, he was embroiled in a Commercial Affairs Department probe that shook the local fraternity ahead of the FAS elections in 2017.
The investigation into a possible misuse of funds was sparked by the revelation of a $500,000 donation made by Tiong Bahru Football Club, through the FAS to the AFF for a Football Management System.
Along with former FAS president Zainudin Nordin, Lee was one of four people arrested, but no charges have been brought in relation to the matter and they were released.
Last month, Lee withdrew his candidacy for one of nine AFC executive committee member seats just before its congress on April 6.

Blues assistant coach Gianfranco Zola was so impressed with the forward - who scored in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Wednesday - that he said that the 27-year-old can make a difference "even if he plays just 20 minutes".
Chelsea had buzzed round the Bournemouth goal for much of the game but it was not until substitute Hazard came on with half an hour to go that they looked creative and decisive enough to break through.
"The difference was the changes that we made," Zola told reporters at the post-match conference in place of manager Maurizio Sarri.
"Of course we have a lot of games and players like Eden (Hazard) we need to keep fit. He can make a big difference.
"He is certainly one of the players who have given us a lot of satisfaction. Hopefully he will stay and achieve great things in the future."
An 84th-minute Hazard goal, which spun into the net after a deflection, earned Chelsea a place in the semi-finals, where they will face London rivals Tottenham.
Another player who caught Zola's eye was England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
"I was impressed with him. He has done well as a wide player, but he showed a lot of sacrifice as a midfielder," Zola said.
"He was getting tired but was disciplined... He is a good boy and works very hard."
It was the first home game since alleged racist taunts against Manchester City's Raheem Sterling prompted an outcry and Chelsea banned four fans.
Chairman Bruce Buck took a page in the programme notes to condemn racism and the atmosphere in the ground was lively but appeared good humoured, with no added security in evidence.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has played down the prospect of in-form striker Callum Wilson leaving the club during the January transfer window, amid reported interest from Chelsea.
The 26-year-old has scored eight goals in 16 league appearances this season and also made his England debut last month.
"Callum's our player and very, very focused on us. I think you could see that with his performance," Howe said.
When asked whether there was any scenario in which Wilson could be sold in January, the manager replied: "Not from my perspective, no."

"With the luck of the gods, the angle at which I'd managed to lift that ball was perfect, and it ballooned in the air and over the bar," the genial Banks said in one of the many recountings begged by fans and the media.
Footage shows Banks chuckling afterwards, as England's Bobby Moore jokingly chides him for not catching the ball.
His achievements went far further than stopping Pele.

Banks won 73 international caps, played nearly 500 times for Leicester and Stoke and won two League Cups, before a car crash blinded him in one eye.
He remained in Stoke, a former mining and pottery city, where he would watch games, attend charity events and take a weekly walk round Trentham Gardens.
"He donated his tie to a charity event I was involved in and we raised Â£200 (S$358.44). Such a gentleman," reminisced Phillip Steele, 76, next to a statue of Banks at the hilltop stadium decked in flags, scarves and flowers.

Favourite saves

Some 2,000 fans were at the stadium to watch proceedings on a big screen. Others lined the route of the funeral procession, which was to stop outside the old Victoria Ground where Banks plied his trade before ending at Stoke Minster for a religious service.
Goalkeepers Jack Butland, Joe Hart and Kasper Schmeichel were to be pall-bearers. Fellow World Cup winners Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst were also expected.
In a largely working-class city obsessed with football, Banks was viewed as a reminder of simpler days before the Premier League's mega-millions.
Everyone had their favourite save.
"Mine was a penalty he stopped against Geoff Hurst at Stoke's 1972 League Cup semi-final at West Ham," Conroy said. "If he hadn't saved that, we wouldn't have been in the final and won our first trophy in more than 100 years."
Banks used to pick out a 1963 FA Cup semi-final when Leicester scored with their only shot on goal while he single-handedly thwarted chance after chance for Liverpool.
Born in the northern city of Sheffield, Banks worked as a coal packer and apprentice bricklayer as a teenager before an inauspicious start at Chesterfield's reserves: he let in 122 goals in the 1954-55 season. After military service, he got a first-team contract at Chesterfield - for Â£7 a week.
Anecdotes from Banks' life tell of a different era to that of today's cosseted players. Before kick-off at the 1966 World Cup semi-final, he ran out of the gum he used to chew to generate spit for his hands - so the England trainer popped out of Wembley and down the road to buy some from a news kiosk just in time to stave off Banks' panic.
