Europa League may grant Emery reprieve
LONDON • Arsenal will face Belarusian outfit Bate Borisov after yesterday's Europa League round of 32 draw and Unai Emery knows the tournament may just be his side's best chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League should there be more defensive horror nights like Sunday.
The Gunners' 22-match unbeaten run in all competitions ended after a shock 3-2 Premier League loss against struggling Southampton, falling three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
Right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner, midfielder Granit Xhaka and a half-fit Laurent Koscielny, playing only his second game after seven months out following Achilles surgery, formed a makeshift backline that struggled to cope with the Saints' aerial bombardment.
They conceded three headed goals at St Mary's and the Spaniard conceded afterwards his side had to defend with more composure if they were to clinch a place in the top four to end their two-season Champions League absence.
"If we won't win like today, we cannot be in the top four. Other teams, usually they are winning," he said after a sloppy display capped by an error by goalkeeper Bernd Leno for striker Charlie Austin's 85th-minute winner.
The Arsenal manager, however, refused to blame the one-game suspensions of regular centre-backs Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, as well as the injury to right-back Hector Bellerin, who went off at half-time, for the error-strewn performance.
He said: "We haven't conceded a lot of chances but today, they (Southampton) scored three goals. We need to do some analysis on how we can improve and do better. We need to continue taking responsibility for the 90 minutes."
Â
Â
Â
Bellerin would likely be out for "some weeks" after suffering a calf strain and Emery admitted he might move for players in the January transfer window if Arsenal fall further behind in the top-four race.
He added: "Only if we think the players can't help us with a good performance. January is not a good transfer window for this reason, but we are going to look and the club is working on transfers in January."
However, the club also have a Plan B as winning the Europa League represents a direct route into European football's premier competition and they were given a boost after a comparatively easier draw which also saw the Blues paired with Sweden's Malmo.
The pick of the round was the tie between five-time champions Sevilla and Italian side Lazio. The first legs will be played on Feb 14, with return legs a week later.

Football: Late Morgan header earns 10-man Leicester win at Burnley
BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Wes Morgan's 90th-minute header earned 10-man Leicester City a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Burnley at Turf Moor in the Premier League on Saturday (March 16).
Chasing a second successive win under new manager Brendan Rodgers, Leicester's task was made all the more difficult when Harry Maguire was given a straight red card for fouling Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the fourth minute.
But it was the 10 men who took the lead in the 33rd minute, as James Maddison curled a brilliant free kick into the net, becoming the first Leicester player to score two goals from direct free kicks in a Premier League season.
Jamie Vardy almost doubled Leicester's lead before Burnley drew level through Dwight McNeil, who swept home Charlie Taylor's pull-back in the 38th minute to score his second Burnley goal.
Leicester dug in after the break, keeping plenty of men behind the ball to frustrate the hosts, as Ashley Barnes missed the best chance to give Burnley the lead.
However, Leicester snatched all three points through Morgan, who rose highest to ensure Rodgers' winning run continued Leicester opened up a three-point gap over Bournemouth in 11th place in the table while Burnley remained 17th, only two points clear of the bottom three.
"We stayed calm," Rodgers said.
"When we were down to 10 men, it was about having that energy and positive attitude. We have the resilience and spirit in this squad."
Burnley came into the contest on the back of three successive defeats, which have kept them embroiled in the relegation battle, but the home fans must have thought their luck was changing when Maguire fouled Gudmundsson.
That red card - the quickest in the Premier League in four years - did little to galvanise the hosts though, with Maddison's superb free kick adding to the woe on the Turf Moor terraces.
McNeil's fine finish five minutes later lightened the mood, but Burnley struggled to find that second goal, with Barnes' miss from close range late on proving costly before Morgan met Youri Tielemans' cross for the winner. Burnley have now conceded a league-high 10 goals in the 90th minute or later this season.
"We are in a tough spell now and you want to come away with something especially against 10 but it is no 'gimme'," Burnley manager Sean Dyche said.
"We did a lot right, but you have to score goals, simple as that."

MONTPELLIER, FRANCE (REUTERS) - Defender Kadeisha Buchanan scored on the stroke of halftime to hand Canada a winning start to the women's World Cup as they edged Cameroon 1-0 at a rainy Stade de La Mosson on Monday (June 10).
Buchanan came storming in at a corner and delivered a textbook header to break the deadlock.
Yet it was an unconvincing performance from Canada, who are fifth in the FIFA women's rankings and were quarter-finalists at the last World Cup.
Despite all their possession and passing, Canada managed just three efforts on target as they battled to get the better of the African's defence.
Canada's veteran captain Christine Sinclair could only muster several half chances in her bid to become the first player to score at five different women's World Cups.
Nichelle Prince hit the outside of the post just before Buchanan's goal and then also put a close-in effort wide on the hour mark.
But Canada almost paid a price for failing to add to the goal when Claudine Meffometou went just wide from a 70th minute corner in the only real effort of the night for Cameroon.

Football: Yoshida not worried about his lack of familiarity with the Lions ahead of Solomon Islands friendly
SINGAPORE - With just four training sessions before his first game in charge - an international friendly against the Solomon Islands on Saturday (June 8) - Singapore's new national football coach Tatsuma Yoshida admitted there is "not enough time" to fully implement his ideas and philosophy.
However, the 44-year-old said he is not worried. At the pre-match press conference at Hotel Miramar on Friday, he added: "My guys are working hard, and they have good motivation.
"It is my first game and although it is a friendly, it is important for us to play hard and get a good result."
Despite having limited time with Yoshida before tomorrow's game, Singapore skipper Hariss Harun is already noticing the subtle differences.
The 28-year-old said: "He is more in-depth in terms of the finer details when it comes to supporting our team-mates, and things like the angle of the pass, where to pass and where to move.
"It is not that previous coaches didn't work on these things but we spend more time with the new coach on such details as we try to find options to get out of tight situations we will find ourselves in during games."
World No. 160 Singapore will play the 139th-ranked Solomon Islands on Saturday and 140th-ranked Myanmar on Tuesday at the National Stadium but they also have their eye on maintaining their unbeaten run to secure more ranking points for a better seeding in next month's World Cup qualifying draw.

In the last international football window, the Lions beat Malaysia (168th) 1-0 and held Oman (86th) to a 1-1 draw before losing on penalties.
Hariss said: "We don't know much about the Solomon Islands but we respect the fact they are ranked higher than us.
"That being said, they are not miles away from us. We have done well to play attacking football and score goals recently. We have the players to try and continue on this way and against teams that are around our level, we have to play more positively and score more.
"We are happy to play at the National Stadium and we have to make our homeground advantage count."
But the Solomon Islands - comprising footballers who mostly play for semi-professional teams in their home country or Fiji - will not be sitting ducks, after a three-week training stint in the Netherlands where they played against local amateur sides as preparation for the Pacific Games in July.
Solomon Islands coach Wim Rijsbergen, a two-time World Cup finalist with Holland and former Indonesia coach, said: "We had a good camp and hopefully we can give a good game.
"I can't tell you much (about how we play) but we have worked hard. Hopefully we can see the results against Singapore and there will be a surprise in our favour."
His captain Benjamin Totori added: "I have watched clips of Singapore on YouTube and we know it's going to be a tough game. We beat Chinese Taipei 1-0 in March and Macau 4-1 last year, we are confident we can keep winning in Asia."
"He's had a lot of injuries, but I think he'd be a great addition for most Premier League teams. Maybe not in the top three or four, maybe not for Liverpool or Manchester City, but he could go to a team like Arsenal. "I would love my old club Palace to get him, and Leicester could be a good shout - he and Brendan Rodgers work well together.

Villans ascend into EPL heaven
LONDON • Aston Villa are back in the big time, £170 million (S$296.8 million) richer and free from the demons that have tormented them since they lost in the play-off final 12 months ago.
After three roller-coaster years in the Championship, the Villans returned to the Premier League after beating Derby 2-1 yesterday and how fitting that Dean Smith, a lifelong supporter, was there at the helm to complete that journey.
There were wild scenes at the end, in the stands and on the Wembley pitch, as Prince William and former club striker John Carew jumped all over one another, while captain Jack Grealish and his teammates celebrated in front of the Villa supporters.
Villa, in truth, handled the occasion far better than Derby and put themselves in a commanding position when John McGinn, capitalising on an error from Derby goalkeeper Kelle Roos, doubled their lead after Anwar El Ghazi had scored just before half-time.
The Rams played within themselves for too long and it was not until the final 20 minutes that Frank Lampard's team started to attack with any real conviction.
Martyn Waghorn's goal, nine minutes from time, gave Derby some late hope, but it was no more than that and Villa showed plenty of grit and resilience to hold on.
Villa captain Grealish told Sky Sports: "I'm speechless. It was such a hard game going up against a great team. We knew it was hard and it would go down to the wire.
"Like I said in my last 10 interviews, when I look around and I've McGinn, Tammy (Abraham) and Anwar, I feel like we can beat anyone. I can't describe how happy I am. We all know where this club belongs. I've stayed here, we've worked hard and we're finally here now."
With so much at stake, it was perhaps not surprising that the game took a while to come alive.
With tension filling the air, it was scrappy at times and hard to see where a goal was coming from until El Ghazi's breakthrough.
If there was an element of good fortune about the way the ball ended up in the back of the net, the passage of play leading up to the goal was by far the best move of the first half.
Albert Adomah cut the ball back to Ahmed Elmohamady, who curled a cross into the box, over the head of Richard Keogh, and El Ghazi threw himself at a ball that went in off his shoulder.
His goal seemed to liberate Villa, whose positive start to the second half was rewarded with another goal just before the hour mark.
From Derby's point of view, it was a dreadful goal to concede and questions will be asked as to how Roos allowed McGinn to get to a high ball ahead of him.
Frank Lampard's men were roused after Jack Marriott drilled a low shot that flicked off Waghorn, another substitute, past Jed Steer in goal. Villa, though, were not going to relinquish their grip on a game that had slipped through their hands a year ago.

Football: Asian Cup holders Australia knocked out by hosts UAE
AL AIN, United Arab Emirates (REUTERS) - Defending champions Australia crashed out of the Asian Cup on Friday (Jan 25) when a contentious Ali Mabkhout goal earned hosts the United Arab Emirates a 1-0 victory and a semi-final meeting with Qatar next week.
Mabkhout struck midway through the second half after Milos Degenek under-hit a pass back to Mat Ryan, and the Al Jazira man swooped to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net for his ninth goal in two Asian Cups.
The Australians complained Degenek had been fouled prior to giving away possession by Mohammed Abdulrahman, but Japanese referee Ryuji Sato waved away the protests and the goal stood.
Victory means Alberto Zaccheroni's side will move on to a potentially politically sensitive semi-final against their Arabian Gulf neighbours, who earlier stunned South Korea 1-0.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt launched a diplomatic and trade boycott of Qatar in June 2017. The countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which it denies.
The UAE's progress was vindication of Zaccheroni's decision to make five changes from the side that edged Kyrgyzstan in the previous round, with veteran striker Ismaeil Mattar making his first start of the tournament.
The home side who looked comfortable despite the changes and within a minute of kickoff almost took the lead. Ismail Al Hammadi flew through the Australian defence, but Ryan was equal to his goal-bound effort.
Al Hammadi threatened again 19 minutes later, with Ryan called into action again after the winger had stepped inside Australia's backline.
The Socceroos threatened, too, in an open and entertaining first half.
Trent Sainsbury looped an early header over the bar and Apostolos Giannou forced a save from Khalid Essa five minutes before the break.
Mabkhout, though, should have scored in the dying seconds of the half, only for his close range header to fizz over the crossbar.
He made amends after halftime when he capitalised on Degenek's poor pass to give his side the lead.
Australia coach Graham Arnold threw on strikers Awer Mabil and Andrew Nabbout in a last-ditch attempt to take the game into extra time. However, the UAE held firm to avenge their loss to the Socceroos in the semi-finals four years ago in Australia.

Gwinn gets Germany's vital goal
Gwinn gets Germany's vital goal
PARIS • Midfielder Giulia Gwinn scored the only goal yesterday as Germany opened their Women's World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over China in Group B.
On a sunny but breezy early summer's day perfect for football, in front of a noisy crowd of 15,283 in Rennes, Germany - twice winners of this competition - dominated possession and territory.
Yet, in a game of slick passing mixed with robust challenges, they twice survived narrow escapes.
The 19-year-old Gwinn fired in from the edge of the box in the 66th minute to break stiff Chinese resistance and seal the victory.
But China had almost stunned the favourites against the run of play in the first half when Yang Li was sent through after a German error, but her shot was cleared when she looked certain to score.
Carolin Simon hit the woodwork with a cross minutes later, but Germany's early dominance faded as the Chinese gained in confidence.
China then earned another golden chance from a quick break, hitting the post in the 44th minute before Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult came to the rescue.
With the win, Germany are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches, the longest run of any team taking part in the tournament in France.
"That was hard work. We started well but the goal didn't come. We were more stable after the break and we got the reward for our efforts in the end," said Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.
In Friday's opener, France coach Corinne Diacre said her side had taken their first step towards Cup success but warned they must stay grounded after they started with a 4-0 victory over South Korea.
Les Bleues were rarely troubled by a limited side and took only nine minutes for forward Eugenie Le Sommer to fire the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Wendie Renard doubled the tally with a downward header in the 35th minute, and the towering defender added another with her head on the stroke of half-time.
France's intensity dropped after the break until five minutes from the final whistle, when captain Amandine Henry curled a superb shot into the far corner.
"We worked a lot, they suffered a lot during the preparation period. We won tonight but it's just the first step," Diacre told a news conference at the Parc des Princes.
"We need six more (steps) to reach our goal, we must keep our feet on the ground, keep working.
"We started well and we made it easy for ourselves. It was important to score a second goal before the break, and we did even better."

Football: Liverpool extend lead at top, Arsenal slip up at West Ham
LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool opened up a seven-point gap at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (Jan 12), while Arsenal's poor away form continued with a 1-0 defeat at West Ham United.
With nearest challengers Manchester City not playing until Monday, Liverpool went into their clash at Brighton on the back of two successive defeats in all competitions and were made to work hard for the three points.
Neither side had a single shot on target in the first half, with the match settled by a Mohamed Salah penalty in the second half. Liverpool's 50th clean sheet under Juergen Klopp carried them home.
Fourth-placed Chelsea opened up a six-point gap over Arsenal in fifth with a 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the day's late fixture.
Arsenal's defeat means they have now won just one of their last seven matches on the road in the Premier League. If Manchester United beat third-placed Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Sunday, they can draw level on 41 points with Arsenal.
There was no such slip-up from Liverpool, even if Brighton did not make it easy for the league leaders.
Roberto Firmino came close to giving his side the lead early in the first half but could not connect with Andrew Robertson's low cross.
For all their possession, though, they struggled to create any meaningful chances. Pascal Gross's clumsy challenge on Salah earned Liverpool the penalty which the Egyptian converted with aplomb.
Once again, Liverpool's defence stood firm as they saw out the win. Liverpool have conceded just 10 goals in their 22 league matches this season; only Chelsea in 2004-05 had conceded fewer after 22 matches in an English top-flight season.

"You have to work hard if you want to be successful and we were ready for it," manager Juergen Klopp said.
"Be ready for the defending, be ready for the counter-press and be ready to make solutions.
"I think it was the most mature performance we have made so far. We take all the points. That's the situation. It's cool but we know that the difference tomorrow and Monday night could be different. We can only concentrate on ourselves."
After their 22-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end at Southampton in mid-December, Arsenal have struggled to find their form, with their away performances of particular concern.
On Saturday, mustering just two shots on target against West Ham at the London Stadium, Arsenal's decline continued.
West Ham comfortably held on after Declan Rice got his first goal for the side - becoming the first teenager to score a Premier League goal for them in almost 10 years.
"It's a bad result for us," Arsenal manager Unai Emery said.
"It's concerning because we need to be competitive at home and away. At home we feel good but away we are not getting the results we want."
Pedro came in for Bayern Munich target Callum Hudson-Odoi for Chelsea against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, with the Spaniard opening the scoring in the ninth minute before Ciaran Clark levelled for Newcastle five minutes before halftime.
Willian was the match winner for Chelsea as he brilliantly curled the ball into the net to score his first league goal since the end of October to secure the points for Chelsea.
"I think it's always difficult in the Premier League," Willian said.
"We have to be more clinical.
"I think the character was good and the most important (thing) is to win the game. I scored a good goal. I found the space and put the ball exactly where I wanted."
At the bottom, Southampton continued their fine form away from home as they earned a hard-fought 2-1 win at Leicester City, despite having played half of the match with 10 men.
Burnley's fourth win in a row lifted them to 15th in the table after they came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Fulham, while bottom side Huddersfield Town were held to a 0-0 draw at Cardiff City.

Brazil win but Neymar out of Copa America
Brazil win but Neymar out of Copa America
RIO DE JANEIRO • Brazil's 2-0 friendly win over Qatar in Brasilia on Wednesday came at a heavy cost after they lost Neymar for this month's Copa America because of an ankle ligament injury.
The 27-year-old forward limped off in the 17th minute after he appeared to twist his right ankle and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) later confirmed that he would miss the tournament, where Chile are defending champions.
"Neymar was evaluated and underwent scans that confirmed a ligament rupture in the ankle," the CBF said in a statement. "Due to the seriousness of the injury, Neymar will not recover in time to participate in Copa America in Brazil."
The injury capped a horrible few days for the Paris Saint-Germain striker, who was stripped of the Brazil captaincy last month and was last weekend accused of rape in a case that has dominated the headlines in his homeland.
Yesterday, newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo reported Mastercard saying it was suspending its use of Neymar in advertising until the situation is "cleared up".
Brazil were already leading 1-0 courtesy of Richarlison's 16th-minute header when Neymar departed and Gabriel Jesus added the second eight minutes later from close range.
But all attention was focused on Neymar, the world's most expensive player and a polarising figure.
He has suffered several serious injuries dating back to 2014, when a brutal knee in the back from Colombian Juan Camilo Zuniga kept him out of Brazil's World Cup semi-final defeat by Germany.
Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro, a football fan who attended Wednesday's game, was pictured with a smiling Neymar as the player received treatment in a hospital.
The leader's good wishes for a speedy recovery were to no avail, though, and Brazil will face Bolivia in their Copa America opener next Friday in Sao Paulo without their best player.

Football: Manchester City should forget about quadruple and focus on Cardiff, says Pep Guardiola
LONDON (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has told his players to put thoughts of a potential quadruple to the back of their minds and focus on Wednesday's (April 3) game against Cardiff City in the Premier League.
With the League Cup already in the bag, Guardiola's side are second in the league, two points behind Liverpool but with a game in hand, and have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and semi-finals of the FA Cup.
While his side have every chance of claiming all three remaining titles still up for grabs, Guardiola said they could just as easily come away with nothing.
"In one week or three days we can lose all three titles," he told a news conference on Tuesday. "Why talk about the quadruple when in this country - a legendary country - it has never happened before.
"Legendary teams like Liverpool, the period (of Manchester United) with Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, Arsene Wenger with Arsenal - no one did it. So why should we do it?"
Victory over Cardiff would lift City back above Liverpool before they face Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup semis on Saturday. They then face Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League tie on Tuesday.
"I'm not in the minds of my players and the fans to tell them what to think," Guardiola added. "If they want to dream and think about winning everything, I'm not a guy to say anything.
"Of course we are there but I said to the players, 'Forget about it, don't think too much. In one week or three days we can lose all three titles, that's the reality.
"I know in your heads we can win all the titles, but for now it's Cardiff.'"
Even if Guardiola expects more twists in the title race, City are exactly where they want to be for at least a few days - and having worked their way back from at least two worrying positions.

Football: Klopp confirms Firmino fitness for Champions League final
MADRID (AFP) - Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is fit for Saturday's Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur despite missing the end of the Premier League season, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday (May 31).
"From his point of view, yes, he is ready," Klopp said at a press conference in Madrid on Friday, just before his squad, with Firmino, trained on the pitch at the Metropolitano Stadium.
However, Klopp refused to say whether Firmino - who has been struggling with a groin problem - would start, joking that he would only do so if Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed his line-up.
"If Poch afterwards says the exact line-up then call me, then you will know. If not, I thought I'd keep at least a few question marks open."
Klopp added: "He is fit, he has trained, you will see him later, he is here, and if nothing happens from the moment when he left the plane to now, then he should be fine."
The Brazilian did not feature in Liverpool's last three matches and before that only came on as a late substitute in their 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-final.

LONDON • Try telling Padraig Amond, Shaquile Coulthirst or Callum Lang - an unlikely trio of footballing journeymen - that the FA Cup has lost its lustre.
Try persuading the fans of Newport County, Barnet and Oldham Athletic, who all rejoiced in classic giant-killing feats on Sunday, that the grand old competition has mislaid its power to amaze and delight.
The Cup will, once again, likely be won by one of the Premier League's big guns in May, but the traditional third-round weekend at the turn of the year offered a timely reminder of why it remains close to the heart of English fans.
After minor league Barnet had stunned four-time winners and Championship side Sheffield United 1-0 away with Coulthirst's penalty and fourth-tier Oldham beat Premier League side Fulham 2-1 with Lang's late header, the best was saved for last.
At Newport's rocking Rodney Parade, Amond's 85th-minute penalty sealed an unforgettable 2-1 win over 2016 English champions Leicester City.
The humble Welsh club, former Uefa Cup quarter-finalists, have endured a chequered history and went bust in 1989, only to reform and climb back slowly from the lowest ranks of minor-league football.
Two seasons ago, they seemed certain to slip out of fourth-tier League Two and back into obscurity.
But, under manager Michael Flynn, who took over with them 11 points adrift at the bottom, they have been transformed and now own a place in FA Cup folklore.
The club, 13th in League Two, came close last year when another Amond goal took them to within eight minutes of beating Tottenham before Harry Kane equalised and Spurs won the replay 2-0.
This time, Amond made sure Newport would not be denied as he tucked away a nerveless penalty, shortly after Leicester's Rachid Ghezzal's piledriver had cancelled out Jamille Matt's early opener.
Newport survived the anxious final minutes to record their first win over a top-flight club since beating Sheffield Wednesday in the third round in 1963-64.
"It's almost Roy of the Rovers stuff. It's the first time I've beaten a Premier League club as a manager so it's one I'll never forget," said Flynn, who joined his players for boxes of peri peri chicken delivered to the home dressing room.
"It's massive for the club to be in the fourth round again and to get some much-needed finances."
Darren Currie, handed the Barnet manager's job on a temporary basis last month, praised the fearlessness of his side after their shock win over Sheffield United, flying high in third place in the Championship.
It is the first time the National League side have reached the fourth round since 2008 and they were the lowest-ranked team in yesterday's draw.
"They've been brilliant. I was proud of them in the two previous games, but this takes it to a whole new level," Currie said of his team.
Oldham caretaker manager Pete Wild, who has been in charge for less than a fortnight since Frankie Bunn's exit, saw his side bridge a 59-place gap in the English league pyramid to upset Fulham.
"We're from a small town overshadowed by big neighbours and I'm so proud to give something back," he said.
Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri accused his players of lacking passion, saying: "We need the fire, the passion, the blood. We need everything if we want to be safe. That is the real problem."

LONDON • Revenge might not be exactly the right word, given that the European dimension of Manchester City's quadruple attempt was probably the one that mattered most to them.
But Pep Guardiola will have been satisfied with the reaction his players showed after the draining events of last Wednesday evening, which saw them exit the Champions League, with Spurs prevailing on away goals despite a 4-3 defeat.
The City manager had confessed he had no idea how his side may be affected by such a cruel late setback, with Raheem Sterling thinking he had scored the winner only to see his goal chalked off by the video assistant referee.
However, they gave one of their more solid performances of the season to take three points from a gutsy and resolute Spurs team to move back to the top of the Premier League table yesterday.
Guardiola admitted his relief that "the title is still in our hands as we could have lost the Premier League today".
He told BBC Sport: "It was a real tough game after our mental defeat on Wednesday. The last two days have been really tough for us."
This was not City at their fluent, most incisive best, but Liverpool and Manchester United will still have been impressed after their 10th league win in a row - the best run by any team this season.
As their nearest challengers for the title, Jurgen Klopp's Reds are well aware of the difficulty of grinding out results against stubborn opponents at this stage of the season.
And United, who host City next on Wednesday, will find it challenging to defend for 90 minutes as well as Spurs did after Phil Foden's fifth-minute opener.
Realistically, the third meeting of these sides within a fortnight was never going to live up to the breathless excitement of midweek, but both teams deserve credit for producing professional performances after their exertions in Europe.
The only drawback from City's point of view was the sight of Kevin de Bruyne limping off before the break, though they have prospered without the influential Belgium midfielder for much of the term and appear equipped to do so again.
Bernardo Silva is one of the less celebrated names on the six-man shortlist released yesterday for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award, the others being teammates Sterling and Sergio Aguero, the Liverpool duo of Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk, and Chelsea's Eden Hazard.
The Portugal midfielder, however, was instrumental in creating the only goal, cutting in from the right to pick out Aguero at the far post, who nodded the ball back across the goal, where Foden's reward for following up assiduously was his maiden strike in the league.
The early breakthrough raised hopes that the game might be an end-to-end goal-fest to resemble the epic match three days earlier.
Yet the rest of the game was relatively muted, with the home side comfortably in control for the most part, without finding their cutting edge.
Spurs were reduced to sending long balls in the direction of South Korean forward Son Heung-min.
Guardiola, calling the Reds "one of the best teams I've seen in my whole life", added: "We are fighting with the best Liverpool ever.
"If we win (the title), we'll be so happy. Even if we don't do it, we've been on a remarkable run. Every day with this club and these players. It doesn't matter what happens next. We'll fight until the end - we'll see how far we get."

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Manchester City 1
Tottenham Hotspur 0

Football: Wu Lei makes history for China in La Liga
CORNELLA DE LLOBREGAT, Spain (AFP) - Espanyol's Wu Lei became the first Chinese player to score in La Liga on Saturday (March 2) as his goal helped his team to a 3-1 win over Real Valladolid.
Wu, who was named the Chinese Super League's player of the year in November, joined Espanyol in January and was making his fifth appearance for the club at their RCDE Stadium.
Valladolid had threatened a comeback but Wu sealed victory in the 65th minute by breaking in behind and sliding a cool finish into the corner.
The 27-year-old forward has scored 15 goals in 63 appearances for China after making his international debut in 2010.
He is not the first Chinese player to feature in Spain's top flight. Zhang Chengdong took that honour in 2015 when he made his debut for Rayo Vallecano but Zhang never scored for the club.
