Devils 'not underdogs'

LONDON • Manchester United's strong domestic form in recent weeks means they are no longer underdogs when they take on arch-rivals Liverpool in tomorrow's Premier League clash, interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.
The Norwegian also believes victory at Old Trafford can be a crucial step towards making his side one "worthy of club history".
"We have to perform better than we did against PSG (2-0 Champions League loss earlier this month), because it's a big game, a big team, suddenly we're not underdogs any more, people praise us and now is the time to play Liverpool," he said.
"We need to learn from PSG, we got to make sure we stay focused, all these games are decided on little margins."
Solskjaer has won 11 of his 13 games in charge, losing just once to PSG in the first leg of the last-16 tie.
Three of the victories have been away at top-six sides Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.

GEE THEM UP
He would be welcome to have his talk to the players if he wanted to. Because we know how much it meant for him to overtake Liverpool.
'' OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United interim manager, is open to inviting ex-coach Alex Ferguson into his side's dressing room for a pre-match pep talk.

The United caretaker boss pointed to these and stated that if United can defeat Jurgen Klopp's side, who are second in the league, it will represent progress in his aim to elevate the side.
"We want to build this team to be worthy of Manchester United history and it's another step (defeating Liverpool)," he said.
"Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea away - it was fantastic to win those three games.
"We want to be in the top four (at the close of the season) and we're playing Liverpool.
"We know how big this game is for Manchester United, and we've taken a few steps in the right direction in that process of becoming a team that challenges higher up the league."
Solskjaer identified midfielder Paul Pogba and striker Marcus Rashford as players the side can be built around while mentioning other important components.
"They're young enough to stay here for many years, but you've got (Nemanja) Matic and (Ander) Herrera that makes Paul's job what it is - you need to complement each other," he said.
"You can't put 11 (Cristiano) Ronaldos or 11 (Lionel) Messis on the pitch and expect to win."

He also joked about inviting Alex Ferguson to deliver the team talk before the big match tomorrow.
The legendary United manager has acted as Solskjaer's mentor since the Norwegian took the reins in December.
"He would be welcome to have his talk to the players if he wanted to," said Solskjaer. "Because we know how much it meant for him to overtake Liverpool."
United have been boosted by news that French forward Anthony Martial and England attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard are making good recoveries from minor injuries - groin and hamstring respectively - and could feature in the match.

'We can score at Barca'

'We can score at Barca'

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows all about improbable Champions League comebacks.
It was 20 years ago in Barcelona, where he scored the late winner against Bayern Munich after Teddy Sheringham had equalised just moments before, to give Manchester United a second European Cup.
Next Tuesday, at the same ground where Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 30 Champions League games since 2013, the manager believes United can summon that 1999 spirit to knock out the Catalans, who lead their quarter-final 1-0 thanks to Luke Shaw's 12th-minute own goal on Wednesday.
"We've scored goals at the Nou Camp before from corners and crosses," said Solskjaer, who suffered his fourth defeat in five matches since masterminding a miraculous comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.
Last month, United became the first team to overcome a 2-0 first-leg home deficit and their 3-1 win in Paris gives the Red Devils "hope and belief we can do it".
Solskjaer added: "But we know we are playing against probably the tournament favourites and going to the Nou Camp will be a challenge.
"It will be a bigger achievement winning that one because with the history of Barcelona, they are not used to losing at home, but we can do it."
United can hope but, in their hearts, they must know that Barca are not PSG and, unless they can find a way to seeing more of the ball and using it to greater effect, they could end up with what they handed out to Lionel Messi: a bloodied nose.
With Messi looking mortal for a change, Barcelona were far from their best, but they still secured the win after Luis Suarez's far post header from the Argentinian's pass deflected in off Shaw and was confirmed by the video assistant referee after initially being given offside.
United defender Chris Smalling had said "bring it on" at the prospect of facing Messi on the eve of the game. And he left the 31-year-old bloodied from the nose as he careered into an aerial challenge on the half-hour mark.
United had excellent performers, with youngster Scott McTominay delivering a performance of real maturity, but Solskjaer simply cannot be happy with a quarter-final home leg that did not feature a single attempt on target.

  • 0

It is the first time Manchester United have failed to have a single shot on target in a Champions League game since March 2005, in a 1-0 loss at AC Milan.

  • 8

Luke Shaw's own goal was the eighth United have scored in the Champions League. No team have conceded more in the history of the competition.

Barca manager Ernesto Valverde is not taking anything for granted and said the tie is still finely poised.
"It leaves a good taste in the mouth to win here, but we know it is not a big enough lead given what happened (with PSG) in the last round," said the Spaniard.
United midfielder Paul Pogba said it is possible to win if they can be "killers in front of goal".
"We saw a team we can beat. If you don't believe that, then you just let them go through," he said.
"We believe we can beat them. They are Barcelona, but we are Manchester United... We have to avoid giving them chances and be killers in front of goal.
"We have to keep believing. It is a Champions League game and we know we can hurt them as well as they can hurt us."

Football: Messi's motivation spurs on Barcelona, says Rakitic

BARCELONA (AFP) - Ivan Rakitic has said Lionel Messi's desire to win the Champions League is proving an inspiration for Barcelona ahead of their Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool on Wednesday (May 1).
At the start of the season, Messi stood on his home pitch and pledged to bring "that beautiful cup back to Camp Nou" after three consecutive years of Barca crashing out in the quarter-finals.
They will host Liverpool this week, four days after celebrating winning La Liga on Saturday, and with a Copa del Rey final to come next month against Valencia. It means a treble is in their sights.
"Whenever our captain says something the rest of us follow," said Rakitic at a press conference on Tuesday.
"Leo has been a La Liga champion 10 times in 15 years and of course, after seeing him lift the cup (on Saturday) with such happiness, that motivates everyone.
"If Leo is happy to win every title, it makes us even more eager too. We know we're Barca, we have to give everything and following the best player in history gives us more confidence to do that."
A domestic double last season could not make up for failure in Europe, after a 3-0 defeat by Roma ensured Barcelona were left watching Real Madrid triumph again.
"We want to be in the final but we have to understand the last few years weren't the best for us," Rakitic said. "We have to learn from that."
The pressure is particularly intense for Messi, whose four Champions League titles include only one in the last seven seasons and still fewer than the five of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Asked if Messi has to win the Champions League this year, coach Ernesto Valverde said: "Nobody has to do anything. We embrace the challenge to win but there is no obligation. Every team that starts in September wants to play in games like this."
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has caused a stir by dismissing the idea his players could be intimidated at Camp Nou, which he described as "just a stadium".
Rakitic believes Barcelona's home advantage is significant.
"I understand he wanted to take a bit of pressure off his players, he wants them to see it as another stadium. All I can say is playing at Camp Nou is a different thing, something special and you have to respect that."
Valverde added: "Our fans can be decisive. We feel it, our rivals have felt it and we hope it will be the same tomorrow."
Liverpool have lost only once in the Premier League this term and are still fighting with Manchester City to win the title.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino already boast 68 goals this season between them.
"We need to stop them running at our defence," Rakitic said. "We are going there to score but we mustn't lose our heads."
"We know how valuable a clean sheet is but our aim is to win," said Valverde.
"We know in these ties one good game is not enough, you need to play two great games. If you switch off for five minutes against Liverpool, they can finish you off."

Football: Barcelona is greater than the sum of its parts, says Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

LONDON • Lionel Messi has scored 22 Champions League goals in 30 appearances against English teams - more than any other player in the history of the competition.
But Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no plans to man-mark the Barcelona talisman in the first leg of their quarter-final tie today, despite admitting he "will go down in history as one of the best ever".
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he said: "Messi will be difficult to stop but never impossible, it's not like Messi against Manchester United, (there's also Luis) Suarez, (Philippe) Coutinho, (Arturo) Vidal, so many good players. We can't focus on one, we have to focus on (all) 11 of them.
"What kind of plan can you have to stop one of the best in the world? This season we (have already) played against (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Kylian) Mbappe, and now Messi. They're challenges I relish, I say bring it on."
Although this is the first time Solskjaer will face the 31-year-old and his team as a coach, there is someone who has a wealth of experience trying to shackle the Argentina captain and whose experience he has drawn upon - his mentor Alex Ferguson.
Revealing he had tapped the former United managerial great's inside knowledge, he said: "Of course, I've spoken with the gaffer since the draw was made but no details... You look at what you'll do against them and we're ready."
While Solskjaer is fully aware "we have to defend well against them", he also urged the Old Trafford faithful to come out in droves as "we will need the crowd in a game like this".

  • Barcelona v Man United: Epic Champions League battles

  • 2011: FINAL, WEMBLEY
This was the last time the two European football juggernauts met in a competitive fixture.
It was, however, far from a tight contest as United were overrun in midfield while Lionel Messi led their defence on a merry run as Barcelona ran out 3-1 winners.
This was tiki-taka football at its peak, with Pep Guardiola lifting his second European Cup as a manager.

    2009: FINAL, STADIO OLIMPICO
While United were ultimately outplayed in the 2-0 loss, they departed Rome asking life's cruellest question - what if?
Despite a blistering start, during which they were on top, they failed to score before their defence gave away a soft opener to Samuel Eto'o.
The Red Devils could only rue Darren Fletcher's ban that left Michael Carrick isolated in midfield against Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, with the former eventually supplying Messi's headed goal.

    2008: SEMI-FINAL 2ND LEG, OLD TRAFFORD
Former United manager Alex Ferguson and his assistant Carlos Queiroz were so determined to restrict the away side's "passing carousel" that they went through an unprecedented level of tactical preparation in training.
The attention to detail worked as they restricted Barcelona to few chances and no goals across the two legs, reaching their first Champions League final since 1999 thanks to Paul Scholes' howitzer on a night of raw emotion.
It was probably, across both legs, their most negative performance in Ferguson's 26 years at the club, but the end justified the means, with United going on to claim their third European Cup.
    THE GUARDIAN

The Norwegian said: "Hopefully, a bit of rain will make for a special evening. Confidence is high. The result, what we did against Paris Saint-Germain, and how we have climbed the table, clawing back points.
"The players have given themselves and the supporters great belief. I can feel the tension, the excitement. The Champions League is possible and we can go on to win it. There will have to be luck and margins, we must perform at the best."
But even if the Red Devils fail to match the Catalan giants' "quality" at home, the tie - their first meeting since the 2011 Champions League final - is "not going to be decided until we play 90 minutes in the Nou Camp".
Backing midfielder Paul Pogba to "perform tomorrow as his job is to be the creator and to drive us forward", Solskjaer added: "We know we can't give fouls away, look how many goals Messi has scored from free kicks outside the area (seven this season), we have to be careful.
"(But) the Champions League throws up so many strange results, we just have to make sure we perform to our best and have a result to take over to Barcelona."
The 46-year-old also touched on Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's first return to his "second home" of Manchester since leaving the club in 2008, before jokingly drawing a parallel with their age gap.
He said: "Gerard, I used to play with him. He came as a young boy (Pique is now 32), we had a lot of belief in him.
"He was maybe unlucky, he came here when (Nemanja) Vidic and Rio (Ferdinand) played here so he didn't get the chances he probably deserved.
"It will be nice to meet him again. Hopefully, we can make him feel old, and not me young."
United also received a boost after it was revealed forward Marcus Rashford would likely be fit, although midfielder Nemanja Matic remains a doubt.

Football: Last-minute pick Jagielka the hero as Everton dim Arsenal's hopes of top-four finish

(REUTERS) - Arsenal's hopes of a top-four finish in the English Premier League were dented on Sunday (April 7), as Everton captain Phil Jagielka took advantage of an unexpected late recall to score the winner in a dominant 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.
The veteran defender, who was brought into the team for a rare appearance after Michael Keane had to withdraw in the warm-up through illness, scored after 10 minutes to earn his side a well-deserved third-straight league win.
It marked a significant setback for disappointing Arsenal, who remain fourth in the table but missed an opportunity to leap ahead of their third-placed north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Unai Emery's side stay on 63 points, one behind Spurs, level with fifth-placed Chelsea and two clear of Manchester United in an increasingly tight battle for the Champions League berths.
The experienced Jagielka proved Everton's unlikely hero after his late call-up, becoming the oldest goalscorer in the league this season at 36 years 233 days when he poked home his finish after Arsenal failed to clear Lucas Digne's long throw.
The ball had fallen kindly after Dominic Calvert-Lewin got the final touch on to him in the aerial battle, allowing Jagielka to score his first league goal in two years and become Everton’s second-oldest marksman in the Premier League era.
“I’m not normally a match-winner, full stop,” laughed the former England defender on Sky Sports. “They’re the best goals, the little tap-ins from two or three yards.”
His goal signalled a hungry and aggressive display from Everton who, while moving up to ninth on 46 points, could have won far more convincingly if Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison had converted any of the side’s 23 attempts on goal.
“We got one goal but could have scored a few more,” added Jagielka.
He earned special praise from delighted Everton manager Marco Silva, who told the BBC: “He was to start on the bench, but showed how he is a good professional and prepares himself for what the coach and team needs. He is always ready to help the team.”
Arsenal, who have conceded at least one goal in every league away match this season, came closest with one curling second-half effort from Henrikh Mkhitaryan but were outplayed and outfought by Silva’s team.  They had only two attempts on target in the whole match and, with Mesut Ozil failing to offer much inspiration as captain for the day, endured one of their more frustrating lacklustre away days.
Arsenal’s frustration became obvious when the two managers were involved in a brief confrontation in the second half.
“The football is emotional. He wants the best for his team, I want the best for mine. At the end we spoke together and everything is normal,” said Silva.
Arsenal boss Emery felt his team would have to rebound swiftly as they prepared to face Napoli in a Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday.
“It was not a good result today but we are still fourth,” said the Spaniard. “We lost and we need to get up quickly and find the next step.”

Football: Croatia, Hungary win to pull away in Euro 2020 Group E

OSIJEK, Croatia (REUTERS) - Croatia and Hungary pulled away at the top of Euro 2020 qualifying Group E after victories on Saturday in what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive pool.
Both teams have six points from three games after a goal and an assist by Ivan Perisic gave 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia a 2-1 home win over Wales while a Willi Orban brace helped the Hungarians to a 3-1 win in Azerbaijan.
Wales and Slovakia have three points each from two games and Azerbaijan none.
Croatia dominated but were forced to hang on in the closing stages and Wales coach Ryan Giggs was disappointed his side came away empty-handed.
"We showed them far too much respect, we weren't aggressive enough early on and we made some stupid mistakes and got punished," he said.
"Now we prepare for Tuesday. Hungary are a hard-working, physical team, but we will need to play a lot better to get anything out of it."
Perisic blazed two shots over the bar before he set up Croatia's 17th-minute opener, when Welsh defender James Lawrence fired the winger's sharp low cross into his own net past stranded goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
Perisic made it 2-0 early in the second half after he got on the end of a loose ball in the penalty area and drove it past Hennessey from 10 metres with his weaker right foot.
Gareth Bale twice came close for the Welsh before substitute David Brooks pulled a goal back in the 77th minute, beating Croatia keeper Dominik Livakovic with a deflected shot from 20 metres.
The visitors piled the pressure in the closing stages and midfielder Harry Wilson missed a gilt-edged chance to grab a late equaliser, heading a teasing Bale cross over the bar from five metres.
In Baku, Balazs Dzsudzsak showed his trademark set-piece skills as he floated in a free kick for Orban to fire Hungary ahead with a glancing header and then swung in a corner bundled in by the centre-back from point-blank range.
Azerbaijan halved the deficit when midfielder Mahir Emreli swept in a 68th-minute rebound but Hungary put the game beyond the home side's reach in the 70th as substitute David Holman drilled a fierce shot into the roof of the net.

Football: Ozil leads five-star Arsenal past Bournemouth

Football: Ozil leads five-star Arsenal past Bournemouth

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil made the most of being handed a rare start by Arsenal boss Unai Emery as the German masterminded a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday (Feb 27) to keep the Gunners in pole position for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Ozil opened the scoring after just four minutes before turning provider for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to double Arsenal's lead.
Lys Mousset briefly gave Bournemouth hope before half-time, but Ozil and Mkhitaryan combined once more to tee up Laurent Koscielny to make it 3-1 before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette rounded off an eighth straight Premier League win at the Emirates for Emery's men.
The Spanish coach has been reluctant to use Arsenal's highest earner in his debut season in charge as Ozil was making just his second league start of the year.
However, the former Real Madrid midfielder showed why Arsenal handed him a contract worth a reported £350,000 a week last January by rolling back the years as the link-up between him and Mkhitaryan questioned why they had not started together in the Premier League since November.
Emery now has a welcome selection headache for Saturday's crucial north London derby away to Tottenham on whether to stick with Ozil and Mkhitaryan, while Aubameyang and Lacazette are also in top form and vying for a place up front.
Arsenal were helped along the way by some feeble Bournemouth defending as the Cherries succumbed to a 10 consecutive away defeat.
Artur Boruc should have got a stronger hand to Ozil's shot that bounced over the Polish goalkeeper to give the hosts a perfect start.
At the other end, Arsenal's own defensive deficiencies were also on show at times as only a fine save from Bernd Leno denied Ryan Fraser an equaliser before Dan Gosling's follow-up effort was bravely blocked by Matteo Guendouzi.
Bournemouth caused their own problems again in the build-up to Arsenal's second as Adam Smith gifted possession to Mkhitaryan, but it was still brilliantly pounced upon as the Armenian exchanged passes with Ozil before slotting into an empty net.
A hint of complacency cost Arsenal moments later when Guendouzi was caught in possession on the edge of his own box by Gosling and he squared for Mousset to roll into an empty net.
However, Arsenal clicked through the gears after the break and put the game to bed before the hour mark.
The Ozil-Mkhitaryan connection again opened up Bournemouth down Arsenal's right and Mkhitaryan picked out Koscielny, whose shot deflected in off Nathan Ake.
Mkhitaryan was the creator again for the fourth when his through ball freed Aubameyang in behind the Bournemouth defence and the Gabon striker stayed cool to round Boruc and slot home his 19th goal of the season.
A start for Aubameyang meant Lacazette had to settle for a place on the bench, but the French international still had time to add his 14th of the campaign with a brilliant free-kick 12 minutes from time.

Football: Arnautovic brace rescues West Ham in 2-2 draw with Brighton

LONDON (REUTERS) - Marko Arnautovic scored twice in the space of two minutes as West Ham United salvaged a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion after conceding two second half goals at the London Stadium on Wednesday (Jan 2).
After a dull first half, with striker Andy Carroll making his first Premier League start in a year as the lone target man before being replaced at the interval, the game between the two mid-table sides burst into life.
Brighton took the lead in the 57th against the run of play when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski punched out a corner shot as far as Dale Stephens, who volleyed the ball home from the edge of the area.
The visitors went 2-0 up in the 59th through Shane Duffy, again off a corner kick, who flicked the ball in from a tight angle at the back post.
If West Ham looked to have crumbled, Arnautovic had other thoughts.
The Austrian pulled one back from close range in the 66th and equalised in the 68th when substitute Michail Antonio crossed from the right - with the ball almost over the byline - for him to fire home.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea suffered a setback in their push for a Champions League spot when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley in the Premier League on Monday (April 22).
Jeff Hendrick gave Burnley an early lead before goals from N'Golo Kante and Gonzalo Higuain put the home side ahead by the 14th minute. However, the Londoners failed to hold on to the lead as Ashley Barnes drew the visitors level 10 minutes later.
After Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Arsenal all lost at the weekend, Chelsea had an opportunity to tighten their grip on the Premier League's top four places.
But it was Burnley - seeking to avoid being sucked back into the relegation fight - who struck first when Hendrick volleyed home in the eighth minute after a headed clearance found him in space on the edge of the penalty area.
Chelsea hit back with two goals in two minutes. First, winger Eden Hazard bamboozled Burnley's defence before cutting the ball back for Kante to sweep home. Then Higuain blasted a shot in off the underside of the crossbar in the 14th minute.
Ten minutes later, Burnley were level again when Barnes evaded his marker at the back post to connect with a headed flick-on from Chris Wood.
After the end-to-end drama of the first 45 minutes, Chelsea dominated possession in the second half but failed to break down Burnley's defence.
The draw pushed Chelsea up a place into fourth spot in the Premier League, level on points with third-placed Spurs and one point ahead of Arsenal, both of whom have a played a game less.
Burnley remained 15th are nine points clear of the relegation zone with three games left to play.

Football: Gonzalo Higuain retires from Argentina duty with message for critics

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain announced his retirement from international football on Thursday (March 28), telling critics "I gave everything" for the Albiceleste.
He says he can devote more time to his family and more focus on his English Premier League club Chelsea.
The 31-year-old French-born forward stands down from national duty with 75 caps, the first coming in 2009 when he marked his debut in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Peru with a goal.
Last year's 2-1 win over Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup was to be his last appearance for his country. He leaves with a 35-goal haul.
Higuain exits the international stage having lost out on World Cup glory in 2014 when Argentina fell to Germany in the final and defeats in the finals of both the 2015 and 2016 Copa America.
Despite coming so close to a major trophy he bows out with his head held high.
"To play in three finals and lose them is not a failure," he told TV Fox Sports Argentina.
And he had a message for critics of his performances playing for Argentina.
"People remember your mistakes, not what you've accomplished.
"Those who attacked will have almost certainly cried for joy when I scored against Belgium to put us through to the semi-finals (at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil).
"That's football."

He added: "Obviously when the criticism turns nasty it hurts everybody. I gave everything to the team. My family has suffered more than me."
While his international trophy chest may be bare, at club level he won two Spanish La Liga titles with Real Madrid in 2007 and 2008 and he helped Juventus to be crowned Italian champions in 2017 and 2018.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Juventus on loan in January, he has scored just three times in 10 appearances.

Jurgen Klopp sees red over referee's calls

Jurgen Klopp sees red over referee's calls

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp claimed Liverpool were refused a clear penalty and Harry Maguire should not have been on the pitch to deny the Premier League leaders a seven-point advantage in the title race as Leicester secured a surprise 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday.
The Reds extended their lead over Manchester City to five points (61 in total), but missed the opportunity to capitalise fully on the English champions' loss at Newcastle on Tuesday as they failed to beat a team outside the top six for the first time this term.
Sadio Mane gave the hosts the lead in the third minute - their fastest league goal in nearly three years - after a sensational 30-pass move, only for Maguire to cancel out his strike in first-half stoppage time.
However, Klopp felt the Foxes were lucky not to have been reduced to 10 men prior to Maguire's equaliser, claiming the defender should have seen red for denying Mane a clear goal-scoring opportunity. He was instead yellow-carded.
Referee Martin Atkinson's refusal to penalise Ricardo Pereira for clipping Naby Keita inside the box after the break added to Klopp's frustration although, given the chances Leicester squandered, he accepted the draw.
The Liverpool manager said: "Everybody agrees there could have been a penalty. I don't know why it wasn't a penalty. Have I spoken to the referee about it? No. I don't think it will change anything.
"I don't think you need a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for that (Keita decision) because of the position of the ref on the pitch.
"But he doesn't want to give it and I don't think VAR would have told him to look at it again."
He then turned his complaints to Maguire.

  • 1st

  • For the first time this season, Liverpool have failed to beat a team outside the top six.

"I would say it is a 100 per cent… a situation where there is a goal-scoring chance that tells the ref he has to give a red card," he said.
"Because not only is Sadio through, but I am also pretty sure Mo (Salah) was on the other side, which gives you two against one, against (Kasper) Schmeichel."
To compound the German's unhappiness, the snowfall on Merseyside resulted in a "difficult pitch" which stymied their usual free-flowing attack.
He added: "We needed to speed it up in the final third, (but) our counter-attacks in the opening moments were defended more by the pitch than our opponents.
"Today, when it started snowing during the warm-up, it was all okay but, when we came out, snow was on the pitch.
"The ball didn't roll really and, if you have the ball pretty much for 70-80 per cent of the time, then it makes life really uncomfortable."
Liverpool looked nervous and susceptible at the back at times and captain Jordan Henderson admitted to BT Sport that "it wasn't our best performance".
"We are disappointed with the result because we wanted the win, but Leicester are a good side," he said. "We'll take the point and move on to the next game."
Leicester manager Claude Puel had insisted before kick-off that his side would, as they had done before, raise their game against a leading club. And the Frenchman was vindicated by a battling display that left his team 11th in the table.
"Of course I am proud of my players," he said. "It was another difficult start to the game. We conceded after two minutes, but we didn't lose our structure. "At the end, we had more chances and it could have been better."

Football: Everton sink Chelsea 2-0 to upset their top-four plans

(REUTERS) Goals from forward Richarlison and midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson helped Everton beat Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday (March 17), denting the London side's hopes of finishing in the top four.
Brazil's Richarlison headed Marco Silva's side in front from close range in the 49th minute after Kepa Arrizabalaga had kept out striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin's powerful header from Sigurdsson's corner.
Everton went 2-0 up in the 72nd minute when Sigurdsson put the ball past Arrizabalaga from the rebound after his penalty kick was saved by the Chelsea goalkeeper following a foul in the box on Richarlison by Marcos Alonso.
"It would be easier for me just to speak about the second half. The first half I didn't like it at all, we were not there from the first minute," Silva told Sky Sports.
"I told our players at halftime they have to do everything different. And they did. They showed great attitude, character and personality." Everton were a transformed side in the second half and went close two minutes after the break, when midfielder Andre Gomes forced a save with a stinging shot from distance.
They then took full control of the contest.
Chelsea had been unlucky not to score after a good start. Eden Hazard's drive was saved by Jordan Pickford in the sixth minute, before he hit the post a minute later and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain had a shot cleared off the line.
Everton climbed to 11th with 40 points from 31 matches while defeat meant that sixth-placed Chelsea stayed on 57 points from 30 games, a point behind Manchester United above them and three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
Coach Maurizio Sarri was at a loss to explain his side's collapse. "I don't know and the players don't know what happened in the second half," the Italian said.
"I cannot explain it. We played the best first half in the season and we could have scored four or five and then suddenly we stopped playing. It's strange and we stopped to defend and counter-attack.
"The problem was mental on the pitch, so the system and the tactics are not important. It wasn't about motivation because we started very well. We have to play eight matches now and we have to fight for our possibilities."

Football: Usual suspects in the frame for expanded Asian Cup

Football: Usual suspects in the frame for expanded Asian Cup

SYDNEY (REUTERS) - The 17th Asian Cup finals will be the biggest in the 62-year history of the tournament but even with 24 teams battling it out, it is hard to look much beyond regional powers Iran, Japan and South Korea as potential champions.
Australia will be hoping to join that trio and Saudi Arabia as multiple winners of the continental crown as they defend the title they won on home soil four years ago.
The Socceroos triumph came at the end of a highly successful staging of a tournament played out in front of bumper crowds that has left the United Arab Emirates with much to live up to.
The Emiratis, playing hosts for a second time after 1996 when they reached the final, showed with their recent staging of Fifa's Club World Cup, though, that there is a passion for the game that can be awoken by local success.
Al Ain's run to the final against Real Madrid brought passionate crowds to the stadiums of Abu Dhabi and provided a welcome pre-tournament boost to a national team that has hardly set the world alight under Italian Alberto Zaccheroni.
It is fair to say, though, that Real also brought more world class footballers to the Emirates than the Asian Cup will with only South Korea skipper Son Heung-min likely to register with many casual football fans outside the Asia-Pacific.
That does not mean there will not be plenty of skilful football on display as the cream of the world's most populous continent contest the equivalent of the European Championship and Copa America.
The world's most populous countries will both be represented but neither China nor India are expected to be around at the business end of the tournament.
The Indians would probably not have qualified without the expansion from 16 teams, while China appear to have stagnated under the guidance of Italian World Cup winner Marcello Lippi.

Under an agreement with his club Tottenham Hotspur, Son will only join the fray for the third and last Group C match against Lippi's side as well as the knockout stage.
The Taeguk Warriors should have more than enough quality to seal one of the top two spots in the group without him, though, given the other two teams in it are debutants in the shape of Kyrgyzstan and Sven Goran Eriksson's Philippines.
South Korea, who won the first two Asian Cups and finished runners-up to Australia in 2015, look like the form team in Asia going into the tournament, having gone unbeaten in six matches under Portuguese coach Paulo Bento since their World Cup exit.
Japan, who made the last 16 in Russia before going out to a thrilling Portugal comeback, also look to have a reasonably straightforward passage having been drawn with Uzbekistan, Oman and Turkmenistan in Group F.
Hajime Moriyasu has had the Samurai Blue playing an attractive attacking style since he took over after the World Cup and even without Shinji Kagawa and Shinji Okazaki they have enough quality to challenge for a fifth title.
The importance of midfielder Aaron Mooy to Australia's challenge was illustrated when coach Graham Arnold included him in the squad even though Huddersfield Town had ruled him out of tournament because of a serious knee injury.
For all the class on the ball that Mooy can provide when fit, though, Australia's title defence is most likely to rest on their ability to find the net now that the totemic Tim Cahill has finally hung up his personalised boots.
A continent as vast as Asia can rarely have put on any sporting event without the backdrop of some political turmoil - astonishing as it may now seem, Israel won the title in 1964 - and the 2019 Asian Cup will be no exception.
Saudi Arabia, who won the last of their three titles the last time the UAE hosted, severed diplomatic ties with Group E rivals Qatar in June, 2017 over Doha's alleged support of terrorism. Qatar denies the accusations.
The UAE also joined the diplomatic and economic boycott of Qatar last year but the 2022 World Cup hosts will be looking to ignore the distractions and hoping their side can offer some hope of success, or at least no disgrace, in four years' time.
There are also representatives of the more troubled countries and territories of the west of the continent with Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen all looking to bring cheer to people who have endured much hardship in recent years.
Iraq did just that with their fairytale run to the title in 2007 and the Lions of Mesopotamia have been drawn to play neighbours Iran in Group D.
Iran have had their traditional uncertain run-up to the tournament but are always a force to be reckoned with in Asia and an end to their 43-year wait for a fourth title cannot be discounted.
Carlos Queiroz's side went out of the last Asian Cup on penalties to Iraq in a thrilling quarter-final played out in a magnificent atmosphere in Canberra.
If their Jan 16 group match in Dubai comes anywhere close to matching that, and the tournament can produce a few more clashes with similar drama and passion, the fans that do turn up in the Emirates will be in for a rare treat.

Football: Oxlade-Chamberlain named in Liverpool's Champions League squad

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been included in Liverpool's squad for the knockout stages of the Champions League as he looks to make a comeback after being sidelined by a knee injury for over nine months.
The 25-year-old underwent surgery after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the semi-final against AS Roma last season, and the England international missed the World Cup in Russia as a result.
Although there were fears that he would miss the entire 2018-19 campaign, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp confirmed in December that he was ahead of schedule in his recovery and would play a role in the second half of the season.
Liverpool, who were runners-up last year, face Bayern Munich in the last-16 with the first leg to be played at Anfield on Feb 19.
