Rivalry with Rashford helping United: Lingard

Rivalry with Rashford helping United: Lingard
LONDON • Jesse Lingard believes his good-natured competition with teammate Marcus Rashford, including goal and assist targets for each player, has helped bring the best out of them and drive Manchester United's bid to climb into the Premier League's top four.
Lingard and Rashford were reported to have feared their careers could stall due to Jose Mourinho's volatile temperament.
But, freed from their previous manager's shackles since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as interim boss, the England internationals have been in fine form.
With nine goals between them since the Norwegian arrived, the good friends have given United's attack a more menacing look in recent weeks.
Rashford got the first goal of the Solskjaer reign, against Cardiff, and Lingard struck twice in that 5-1 rout.
Having netted the winner in United's 1-0 victory at Leicester last weekend, Rashford has now scored in six of his side's eight league games under Solskjaer.
"Marcus and me have been setting targets for each other to challenge ourselves," Lingard said. "Obviously it's different aims, maybe in certain games it's how many shots, or this many touches in a game.
"It's just different random things, just to make you think and it's to kind of push each other because you want your friend to be successful as well. I'm not going to go into the amount of numbers involved because then everyone will know."

FRIENDLY COMPETITION
It's just different random things, just to make you think and it's to kind of push each other because you want your friend to be successful as well.
JESSE LINGARD, Manchester United forward, on him and teammate Marcus Rashford setting various targets for each other.

Solskjaer has earned praise for inspiring his side's 10-match unbeaten run since replacing the sacked Mourinho in December.
With seven victories in eight league games, fifth-placed United have surged back into the race to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top-four finish.
United sit just two points behind Chelsea and can end this weekend in fourth place if they beat struggling Fulham at Craven Cottage today and Maurizio Sarri's team lose at Manchester City tomorrow.
The Red Devils also host Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday and face Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round later this month.
If Solskjaer can lead United to silverware and finish in the top four, it might be hard for the Glazer family and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to ignore his credentials for the manager's post on a permanent basis.
Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri feels the former United striker has already proved he deserves the job.
"At the moment, he deserves it. He's shown all the players are with him. Manchester United's mentality has changed. Why not?" said Ranieri, whose side are second bottom after one win in their past five league games.
Another player who has flourished under Solskjaer's watch is Phil Jones. United rewarded the defender with a new deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2023.

Football: Huge respect for Tottenham, says Guardiola after Champions League draw

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he has "huge respect" for Tottenham Hotspur after Friday's (March 15) Champions League quarter-final draw pitted the Premier League rivals against each other.
With four English clubs in the last eight for the first time in 10 years it was always likely two would clash next month and while Tottenham have suffered a dip in form of late, Guardiola said Mauricio Pochettino's team would be a tough hurdle.
"Huge respect for Tottenham, I know them quite well," Guardiola, speaking at a news conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final at Swansea City, told reporters.
"They have different systems they can use, five at the back, a diamond, 4-2-3-1. I know how good they are at the front with Son (Heung-min), (Harry) Kane, Dele Alli and (Christian) Eriksen. Experience in all departments."
The sides will meet three times in 11 days with Tottenham hosting the first leg on April 9 before the second leg on April 17 and a Premier League clash, also at the Etihad, three days later.
"In that position it was three different competitions," Guardiola said.
"It's game by game, the first games influences the second one, the second one influences the third.
"We travel to London. London is closer than going to Spain or Catalonia," Guardiola added.

Guardiola's immediate focus is on beating Championship side Swansea on Saturday to keep alive City's hopes of a quadruple.
They will be huge favourites for that clash in south Wales but will be without defenders John Stones and Vincent Kompany as well as midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho are also out.
"We will have to make changes," Guardiola said. "Stones on bench, not ready to play. He is still recovering.
"Vinny and Kevin not fit. We don't have too many options. Tomorrow is a quarter-final, that is the most important thing by far, to reach the semis."

Football: Five players that led Manchester City to Premier League glory

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City became the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League on Sunday (May 12) as a 4-1 victory at Brighton capped a remarkable 14-game winning run which saw them edge out Liverpool in a thrilling title race.
Here, Agence France-Presse Sport looks at five of the key players that led Pep Guardiola's men to the title:

Sergio Aguero

City have now won the title in four of the past eight seasons and one of the few common strands has been Aguero's goals.
The Argentine has shrugged off the doubts Guardiola had about his suitability for the Catalan's style of football when he first arrived in Manchester to reinstate himself firmly as City's first-choice striker.
Aguero has now scored at least 20 Premier League goals in five straight seasons, the first player to do so since Thierry Henry.

And many of his 21 this season were the most important ones in City's run to the title.
His instant response as Brighton threatened a final-day surprise settled nerves on Sunday; he bagged hat-tricks against Chelsea and Arsenal; scored the opener at home to Liverpool; and the winner in a hard-fought 1-0 win at Burnley by forcing the ball a mere 30 millimetres over the line.
On such small margins, the title race was won.

Aymeric Laporte

Manchester City's Aymeric Laporte. PHOTO: REUTERS

The French defender was signed for a then club-record £57 million (S$101 million) in January 2018 and after settling in during the second half of last season, has become the mainstay of Guardiola's defence.
The 24-year-old has played more minutes in the Premier League this season than any other City outfield player and was rightly rewarded with a place in the PFA's team of the year.
Laporte's ability to distribute the ball accurately from the back is why Guardiola was so keen to bring him to the Etihad from Athletic Bilbao, but he also possesses the pace and physical power to cope with the rigours of the Premier League with ease as he showed in scoring the goal that put City in front at Brighton.

Fernandinho

Manchester City's Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho. PHOTO: AFP

City's strength in depth has been key to holding off Liverpool's charge despite going deep in four competitions, but if there is one player that Guardiola's squad does not have a natural replacement for it is Fernandinho.
The Brazilian's presence was badly missed in December defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester that threatened to kill off City's title defence.
He was rushed back to steady the ship and was outstanding in the 2-1 win over Liverpool on January 3 that ultimately proved the difference between the sides.

Bernardo Silva

Manchester City's Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva. PHOTO: AFP

The diminutive Portuguese playmaker had to wait patiently for his chance to shine, having spent most of his debut season on the sidelines, but from the first game of this campaign Guardiola claimed his preferred line-up was "Bernardo and 10 more".
Silva's seven goals and eight assists in the Premier League have helped make up for Kevin De Bruyne's lengthy absences.
However, he is far from a luxury player who adds a final flourish. In the decisive January victory over Liverpool, he ran 13.7 kilometres, then a season-high for distance covered by any player in the Premier League.
"I love him, it's simple like that," said Guardiola.

Raheem Sterling

Manchester City's English midfielder Raheem Sterling. PHOT: AFP

His status as a frontline campaigner in the fight to rid football of racism played a big part in his crowning as the football writers' player of the year.
But the England star has grown in stature both on and off the pitch this season.
His 23 goals in all competitions matches his personal best for a single season and Guardiola's insistence in using him in almost every game, despite having Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez in reserve, speaks volumes of how important Sterling has become to City's fortunes.

Europe increasingly Chelsea's priority

Europe increasingly Chelsea's priority
PARIS • The Europa League might not be top of Chelsea's priorities this season but, in current circumstances, today's last-32, first-leg clash at Malmo takes on extra importance for Maurizio Sarri's side.
The Italian's days in charge at Stamford Bridge could be numbered after Sunday's humiliating 6-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester City, their heaviest loss in 28 years and also their fourth consecutive away defeat.
But Sarri is still there for now as the London club continue a gruelling run of fixtures - the two legs of the tie against Malmo come either side of the FA Cup fifth-round clash with Manchester United. Another meeting with City in the League Cup final follows.
"It's difficult to accept such a heavy defeat, but we have a lot of matches coming up to lift our heads and give us hope for good results at the end of this season," N'Golo Kante said on the Chelsea website.
The Blues breezed through their group despite Sarri regularly leaving out his leading players, and he is likely to rotate again in Sweden.
With this being the close season in Sweden, Malmo have not played a competitive game since the end of the group stage in December.
For Chelsea and their London rivals Arsenal, United's recent resurgence in the league increases the need to keep going in the Europa League - winning the final in May could be the London sides' best chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League.
Unai Emery's Arsenal are in Barysaw to play Bate Borisov. The Belarusian champions, who won the last 13 league titles but lost home and away to Chelsea in the group phase, should not be a match for the Gunners.

Pogba's brother blames Mourinho for star's slump at United

LONDON • Paul Pogba's brother Mathias Pogba has hit out at Jose Mourinho over the Portuguese's treatment of the Manchester United midfielder.
The 28-year-old, who plays for Tours in France's third division, did not hold back in his criticism of the former United manager during an interview with RMC Sport.
Mourinho fell out with Pogba on a number of occasions during his 21/2-year spell in charge of United.
He questioned Pogba's work rate and attitude in public and also at one point chastised the Frenchman in front of cameras at the club's Carrington training ground.
"It was Mourinho who was the problem," said Mathias, who is three years older than his World Cup-winning brother.
"Mourinho still wants to be the centre of attention. The problem was Mourinho, right down the line. In the locker room, outside the locker room... Everything.
"He always wants to be the maestro, the centre of attention. Paul does not even calculate that aspect: you respect him, he will respect you, you trust him, he will produce big performances."
Mourinho left Pogba out of the United team for the final three matches of his tenure. The 55-year-old was sacked on Dec 18.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then immediately recalled Pogba to the starting XI after being named caretaker manager for the rest of the season and the Frenchman has responded by scoring four goals in four games.
The former Juventus midfielder missed last Saturday's FA Cup third-round win over Reading because of a leg injury he suffered in the Premier League victory over Newcastle United.
He had to have treatment on the injury over the weekend, meaning he was unable to fly out with the rest of the squad to Dubai last Saturday for their warm-weather training camp.
He joined up with his teammates on Monday and took part in training on Tuesday, suggesting that he will be fit for Sunday's league game away to Tottenham Hotspur.
Chris Smalling is a doubt because of a foot injury and fellow defender Marcos Rojo has been sent back to England after experiencing yet more problems in his recovery from a knee injury.
Midfielder Fred has been given permission to miss the five-day camp because his partner is expecting a baby.
Solskjaer has encouraged his players to forge a competitive spirit in training and does not mind if tempers fray from time to time.
Referencing his own playing days, the Norwegian said: "We had one or two fights, but that is just the demand, the standards that you set.
"If the session ends with a little bit of a quarrel, I don't mind that because it means they are winners, they want to improve. If you settle for losing in training, you'll lose in a game when it really matters."
The 45-year-old is also unfazed by the prospect of facing Spurs, who beat United 3-0 in the reverse fixture in August.
"It'll be tough, but we can make it tough for them," he said.
THE TIMES, LONDON

Football: Hougang United lament red card as they crash 5-1 to Tampines Rovers in Singapore Premier League

SINGAPORE - They were touted as darkhorses for this year's Singapore Premier League (SPL) title but, after the first week of the season, Hougang United find themselves in the same place they were at the end of last term - bottom of the table.
The Cheetahs crashed to a 5-1 defeat by Tampines Rovers at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday (March 3) after playing most of the second half with 10 men, following the 50th-minute sending-off of Justin Hui.
The 21-year-old midfielder picked up two yellow cards in the space of just three minutes and 40 seconds to receive the marching orders from referee G. Letchman.
Tampines had led 1-0 at that point, thanks to a first-half goal by Irwan Shah and, even though the Stags were pegged back by Faris Ramli's 56th-minute penalty, they went on to assert their dominance and rack up a handsome win.

Hougang head coach Clement Teo, who felt there was no "ill intent" in the challenge that earned Hui his second yellow card, was sanguine after the game.
"Yes, the match was frustrating in terms of the result," said the coach.
"But, if you're talking about effort, I can't fault my players. When you are a man short against a quality team like Tampines, you have to face the consequences. I'm not worried about this result."
Revealing he was filling out the substitution card to replace Hui just before the player committed his second offence, Teo added wryly: "We were just a little too slow."
The first half proved to be a cagey affair, but it was Tampines who drew first blood after full-back Irwan Shah charged into the box on the stroke of half-time and fired home.
National winger Faris then earned and converted the penalty that levelled the score, but the goal proved a false dawn for the Cheetahs.
Tampines made full use of the extra man and scored three times in 12 minutes through Ryutaro Megumi (64th min), an own goal by Hougang skipper Zulfahmi Arifin (71st) and substitute Zehrudin Mehmedovic (76th). Jordan Webb added a fifth in injury time.
Stags' first-team coach Gavin Lee admitted that Hui's red card gave his team "greater control of the game", but, while he was happy with the win, he was not completely satisfied with his team's performance.
"We got the points we wanted, but we can't... overlook certain phases of performance which should have been better," said the rookie SPL coach.
While he praised his team's pace on the counter-attack, Lee insisted he would not get carried away by Sunday's result.
"Our challenge is to stay consistent in our thinking and action and, hopefully, we can sum it up at the end of the season and see (a positive outcome)," he said.
In the other match on Sunday, striker Andrei Voronkov scored the winner in the 22nd minute as Brunei DPMM beat Home United 1-0 at the Bishan Stadium.

Reds must rediscover passion: Klopp

Reds must rediscover passion: Klopp

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has urged his Liverpool players "to learn to adapt" to positive pressure and defensive opposition after the manager was left bewildered by his team's performance against an injury-hit Manchester United.
Klopp described Sunday's goal-less draw at Old Trafford as both a point gained and a missed opportunity as his Liverpool side returned to the top of the Premier League at the expense of Manchester City.
The German was at a loss to understand why the disruptions - United lost Nemanja Matic before kick-off and then Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and his replacement, Jesse Lingard, to hamstring injuries inside 43 minutes - affected the visitors more than the hosts.
He told reporters: "From my point of view, it is very positive pressure, but I don't have to play - I only sit here and say dumb things, so that's easy.
"For the boys, they all have to learn in these situations. The only way we can do it is with passion.
"The heart and soul of this club is passion and we have another chance (against Watford tomorrow), then there is the (Merseyside) derby (on Sunday), which is a very emotional game.
"This game was a fight, but a different fight to what we expected and we didn't adapt like we should have.
"Today was not brilliant, but we lose here more often than we drew. It feels like we should have won, but it was the same against Bayern (Munich) when they came and defended with all they have."
Liverpool endured their own injury issue when Roberto Firmino turned an ankle in the first half, which Klopp called "a catastrophe". The club have yet to issue a diagnosis on the injury.
He added: "It was a game without a lot of highlights, it was intense. All the injuries in the game obviously cost us rhythm and we couldn't get it back. On days when United are beatable, you have to do it and we didn't do it."
Having kept a clean sheet despite the injuries, United's caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took an opposing view.
"He can have his own opinion," the Norwegian said of Klopp. "We had a good performance, defensively absolutely fantastic.
"He's not happy if they didn't have a shot on target, or one, and that was a long strike from (Daniel) Sturridge, but I was very pleased with the performance and the fans enjoyed it."
Solskjaer, however, took umbrage at how Marcus Rashford came in for rough treatment throughout the game.
Admitting the forward, who is expected to miss the trip to Crystal Palace tomorrow, would have been withdrawn early after "his ankle blew up" if not for injuries to Herrera and Mata, Solskjaer said: "I can't say he was targeted, but there were quite a few fouls on him definitely."

Ten Hag proud despite 'cruel' defeat

Ten Hag proud despite 'cruel' defeat

AMSTERDAM • Praises have flowed for the Ajax academy graduates, who have stayed true to the "total football" philosophy espoused by Johan Cruyff in their rousing run from the qualifiers to the final four of the Champions League.
However, after failing to end a 24-year European Cup drought on Wednesday, the reality dawned on coach Erik ten Hag and his players that his team will now inevitably be broken up in the summer.
The Dutch league leaders were undone 3-2 on the night by a Lucas Moura hat-trick, including his added-time goal that punched Tottenham's ticket to the final on away goals despite the tie ending 3-3.
This season, Ajax have been a butterfly team, here for one glorious summer, but whose wings are already beginning to disintegrate a little in the sunlight.
Yet ten Hag found consolation in their "fantastic" European campaign despite the heartbreaking nature of their semi-final exit.
He said: "Football can be very beautiful and it can be very cruel. We have had to experience that today. We were one second away from the final and for that, our team deserves a very big compliment. I'm very proud of my players."
Despite his pride, he rued the golden opportunity that slipped through their fingers, after goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech gave them a commanding 3-0 aggregate lead.
The Dutchman added: "If you're 2-0 up, you have to make sure you win and we failed to do that. In the first phase after half-time, we lost our grip on the game, they played a more opportunistic game.
"At 2-2, we dominated again and we created chances. It's very bitter that none of those went in and they scored a very fortunate goal in the last seconds, maybe even past what should have been the last second."
De Ligt heads a list of names that will likely be sold, including Ziyech, who hit the post; David Neres, who was injured during the warm-up; and Donny van de Beek, the first-leg match-winner. Frenkie de Jong has already agreed a blockbuster move to Barcelona.
While captain-defender de Ligt, 19, admitted he "did not know how to recover from this" and that it was "a dream that went bad", he told Dutch TV channel Veronica that Ajax were still going to fight for a domestic double.
The Dutch Cup winners lead the Eredivisie on goal difference from PSV Eindhoven with two matches left.

Reds still in a good position: Klopp

Reds still in a good position: Klopp

LONDON • The four-point lead Liverpool have at the top of the Premier League even after a 2-1 defeat by rivals Manchester City on Thursday was still impressive given their lack of title-winning experience, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.
The match in Manchester was billed by many as an early title decider, where a Liverpool victory would have given them a 10-point lead at the top with 17 games to go, having played City home and away.
However, goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane, either side of a Roberto Firmino equaliser, ended Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League start and moved City to 50 points and within touching distance of top spot.
"I have so much faith in (my) players you cannot imagine," Klopp said.
"If somebody would have said after both games against Man City that we would have had a four-point lead, I would have paid good money for this, as I thought it was not possible.
"If we would have won the title five times in the last 10 years, then things would be different. We don't have the experience like this. We are still in a very good position so I am happy for this.
"I knew that City could beat us, that is not new. They beat us 5-0 last year. It did not have anything to do with mental strength on one side or the other. It was just unlucky."
Klopp was also unhappy with one decision that did not go his side's way, when City captain Vincent Kompany received only a yellow card for a lunge at Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
"Situations like this happen. A player goes to ground, and he took the risk. If Mo is on his feet, not jumping, then we all know what happen. Mo can go through," he said.
"Kompany saw him, hit him, and you can make your own opinion."
Despite the loss, former Liverpool captains Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher believe the Merseyside club still have the advantage in the Premier League title race.
"Liverpool are in great shape," Souness told Sky Sports. "Ask both managers what position you'd rather be in right now.
"You're going to take the four points sitting top of the league, especially with the run-in that Liverpool have."
Having played Arsenal and City back-to-back, Liverpool do not play another top-six side until Feb 24 when they travel to Manchester United.

  • L10

  • January matches Liverpool have lost out of 25 (W8 D7 L10) in all competitions under Jurgen Klopp.

Carragher also echoed Souness' sentiments and alluded to Liverpool's recent form against teams outside the top six.
"The form they have shown, certainly against sides outside the top six, they have got a lot of those games coming," the former defender said.
"Four points clear is still a really good position to be in. Liverpool just need to relax, get some wins under their belt, maybe improve that lead if they can over the next month to six weeks."

But now comes some hard work indeed. When Firmino had scored what Klopp hoped would finish as an equaliser, he had clutched a water bottle like it was the league trophy itself, but now the finish line must seem a long way off.
Liverpool next play Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday.

Football: Paul Scholes charged by FA for alleged betting breaches

LONDON (REUTERS) - Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the Football Association's betting rules, the English governing body said on Tuesday (April 16).
It is alleged that the 44-year-old former England international placed 140 bets on football matches between August 2015 and January 2019, the FA said in a statement.
The period covers when Scholes was a part-owner of non-league side Salford City, but before his appointment as Oldham manager in February 2019.
"Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to The FA's Betting Rules," the FA statement read.
Scholes' spell in charge of Oldham started brightly with a win, but he failed to pick up another victory in his next six games and left with the side languishing in 14th place in the fourth tier.
Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies during a glittering playing career with United, resigned as a club director at Salford, while retaining his 10 per cent stake, before taking the Oldham job.
He recently left his role as manager of League Two outfit Oldham Athletic after only 31 days in charge.
He has until April 26 to respond to the FA charge.
Representatives of Scholes could not immediately be reached for comment.

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri has downplayed Pep Guardiola's suggestion that Chelsea are still in the Premier League title race as he prepares his team to face leaders Manchester City on Sunday..
Chelsea not in Premier League title race, says Sarri | Aaj News

Albirex's target is still 'to win all the titles'

Albirex's target is still 'to win all the titles'

Among the 15 trophies on offer in local professional football since 2015, Albirex Niigata have won 13 of them, completing three straight clean sweeps since 2016 in an era of dominance never seen here.
But, before tonight's Community Shield curtain raiser, has the first signs of weakness appeared for the team that clinched the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title last year without losing a game?
Last week, Albirex were thumped 4-0 by Tampines Rovers in a pre-season friendly.
The defeat was notable as the White Swans had played a strong XI, barring new 2.05m forward Makito Hatanaka.
The club's new head coach Keiji Shigetomi said: "Tampines are a very strong team with many national players. They will be title contenders this year.
"Even though we lost 4-0, it was a very good lesson for us. I learnt more about my team and we will be ready for the Community Shield."

NEW CHALLENGES
Last season, we didn't lose any match, but we have only four members of that squad who are still with us. And we have (six) Singaporean players with us, it will be a more difficult challenge for us.
KEIJI SHIGETOMI, Albirex Niigata's new head coach, on the season ahead.

Albirex will meet SPL runners-up Home United tonight at the Jalan Besar Stadium (6pm).
Shigetomi's men had won their other sparring matches (2-0 against Hougang United and 6-0 against the Singapore Under-18s), but face a tough task rebuilding after new league rules dictate that the Japanese club have to sign a minimum of four local players, and have to start with at least two every game.
Shigetomi said: "Our target is to win all the titles, but the team are new and we have to work very hard. Last season, we didn't lose any match, but we have only four members of that squad who are still with us.
"And we have (six) Singaporean players with us, it will be a more difficult challenge for us. But we will take one game at a time and not look too far."
From last year's all-conquering side, the White Swans have kept only midfielder Hiroyoshi Kamata and the defensive trio of Shuhei Sasahara, Kaishu Yamazaki and Kodai Sumikawa while Singaporeans Hyrulnizam Juma'at, Gerald Ang, Noor Akid, Firas Irwan, Zamani Zamri and Martens Daniel will don the orange jersey this season.
Shigetomi said: "The change in regulations affected our team a lot. The overall age of the squad has also been reduced.
"A lot of the players may not have the necessary experience yet. It will be a challenge."
As Albirex try to maintain their winning formula in the SPL, new Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki is plotting to end the Protectors' 16-year title drought.
He said: "Our target is to win the (league) title, but we know that Tampines and Albirex are very strong and Hougang (United) have beefed up their squad.
"It's not going to be easy, but the target is there. We finished second last year and we want to take one step further this year."
Home had also conducted an efficient recruitment drive, snapping up former Albirex forward and SPL Young Player of the Year Adam Swandi.
The 23-year-old striker will cast emotions aside when he faces his former team tonight.
Adam said: "It's a very difficult position for me because Albirex really groomed me into a better player and person.
"I want to thank them for the opportunity, but football is football, you go to different teams in different seasons.
"I now have to fight for the crest on my chest and I want to give 100 per cent to get the Community Shield."

Football: Nine-man Spurs slump at Bournemouth; Cardiff relegated

LONDON (REUTERS) - The race to secure the final two Champions League qualification places from the Premier League looks likely to go to the final weekend after Tottenham Hotspur again slipped up, losing to a last-minute goal while having two men sent off at Bournemouth.
On an eventful final Saturday (May 4) of the season, Cardiff City's 3-2 defeat at home to Crystal Palace ensured they were relegated along with Huddersfield Town and Fulham, who lost 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, while West Ham United brushed aside Southampton 3-0.
A win for Spurs at the Vitality Stadium would have secured a top-four slot ahead of next week's Champions League semi-final second leg against Ajax Amsterdam.
But, after losing at home to West Ham United last week and then going down to the Dutch side in midweek, Mauricio Pochettino's side failed to fire again and went down 1-0 after Nathan Ake struck in injury time.
Son Heung-min was first to be sent off for pushing Jefferson Lerma just before halftime with Juan Foyth shown a straight red card for a studs-up tackle on Jack Simpson two minutes after coming on at the interval.
Spurs stay third on 70 points, four points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who have two games remaining. But Pochettino's side know victory in their final game against Everton will see them qualify, with Chelsea and Manchester United also capable of securing a top-four slot.
"It is very painful to play with two players less than the opponent," Pochettino said.
"We need to move on. We cannot change the decisions. We have ahead two finals against Ajax and Everton. It is in our hands. If it does not happen we will be proud because nobody expected Tottenham to be in the position they are today.
"We are fighting (five) teams, it is impossible for all six to get the top four, whatever happens I will feel proud and whatever happens in the (Champions League) semi-final I will be proud."

Spurs also had to contest with a fine Premier League debut from 19-year-old goalkeeper Mark Travers, who was in inspired form for the hosts with a string of fine saves.
Cardiff never seriously looked like securing the win they needed to stand any chance of staying up, with Wilfried Zaha, Michy Batshuayi and Andros Townsend scoring the goals for Palace, who won for the fifth time in six away league games.
The result confirmed Cardiff's relegation after one season for the second time in five years. It was also manager Neil Warnock's third top-flight relegation after also going down with Notts County in 1992 and Sheffield United in 2007.
At Molineux, Leander Dendoncker's 75th-minute volley against Fulham moved Wolves a step closer to possible European football next season.
The Midlanders will be guaranteed to finish seventh in their first season after promotion if Leicester fail to beat Manchester City on Monday. Wolves would then need City to beat Watford in the FA Cup final to secure a place in Europe for the first time in 39 years.
The one bright spot for Fulham was Harvey Elliott, who became Premier League's youngest ever player at the age of 16 years and 30 days when he came on after 88 minutes.
Marko Arnautovic scored twice for West Ham - his first goals for four months - as the home side completed a routine 3-0 win over Southampton. Ryan Fredericks rounded off the scoring with his first-ever Premier League strike.
Liverpool went into Saturday's evening kickoff knowing they almost certainly needed to beat Newcastle United to stand any chance of pipping Manchester City to the title.
