Football: Chelsea face partial stadium closure over alleged racist chanting by fans as Uefa opens case
LONDON (THE GUARDIAN, AFP) - Chelsea face the partial closure of Stamford Bridge in the Europa League after Uefa opened disciplinary proceedings over allegations that their travelling supporters engaged in racist chanting during the draw at Vidi last month.
The European football governing body announced on Tuesday (Jan 15) that, based on the report submitted by its ethics and disciplinary inspector who had investigated incidents at the group-stage fixture in Budapest, proceedings had been instigated against Chelsea.
Uefa's control, ethics and disciplinary body will deal with the case at its next meeting, on Feb 28.
Its regulations state that, if supporters are found guilty of behaviour "that insults the human dignity of a person or group of persons on whatever grounds, including skin colour, race, religion or ethnic origin", the minimum punishment is the partial closure of their home stadium in a subsequent fixture.
Chelsea host the second leg of their round-of-32 tie with the Swedish club, Malmo, on Feb 21, meaning any sanction would be implemented either in the last 16 or, if they have been eliminated, when the London club next feature in the competition.
This would be Chelsea's first offence, and a second incident would see them forced to play a match behind closed doors.
The club publicly condemned the chants - an anti-Tottenham Hotspur (who have a large Jewish fan base) song which was heard in the opening three minutes - in the immediate aftermath of the 2-2 draw at the Groupama Arena.
They have endeavoured to identify those in the 1,273 away support involved with a view to imposing bans from Stamford Bridge, as well as offering anyone found guilty the chance to enter an educational programme in a bid to learn why the chant is so offensive.
The club, whose owner Roman Abramovich is Jewish, launched its Say No to Antisemitism campaign a year ago to raise awareness and educate about anti-semitism in football.
The chairman, Bruce Buck, has since published an open letter to supporters condemning the actions of a "mindless" minority and vowing not to rest "until we have eliminated all forms of discrimination from our club", adding: "If you do not share these values, this is not the club for you."
Chelsea have already been dogged by accusations of fan racism in recent weeks, with four supporters banned pending an investigation into alleged racist insults directed at Raheem Sterling during the Blues' 2-0 win over English Premier League champions Manchester City in early December.
Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri said the club were in a "fight against stupid people" following further allegations of racism by supporters in the away end during his side's 2-1 win at Watford on Boxing Day.

Football: Birmingham hit with nine-point deduction after breaching financial rules
LONDON (AFP) - Championship side Birmingham have been docked nine points for breaching financial rules, the English Football League announced on Friday (March 22).
The Championship side broke the EFL's profitability and sustainability regulations and faced a possible 12-point deduction and a transfer ban.
The penalty drops the club from 13th in the second-tier table to 18th, leaving them only five points above the relegation zone.
An independent disciplinary commission heard the case on Monday and decided the Midlands club should not be given the maximum penalty.
It follows a review of the financial submission from Birmingham City for the three-year period 2015/16 to 2017/18 where it was determined the club had recorded losses in excess of the £39 million ($51 million) threshold.
"The profitability and sustainability rules, aligned with those in the Premier League, became effective in 2015/16," said an EFL spokesman.
"Season 2017/18 was the end of the first full reporting period with Birmingham City the only club found to have breached those requirements, when it incurred adjusted losses of £48.787 million, £9.787 million in excess of the permitted losses."

Football: Chelsea not in Premier League title race, says Sarri
LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri has downplayed Pep Guardiola's suggestion that Chelsea are still in the Premier League title race as he prepares his team to face leaders Manchester City on Sunday.
The 60-year-old Italian said his side were "lucky" to beat City in December when they ended the champions' 21-match unbeaten run with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
But Sarri said his fourth-placed team are not in the title picture, even though Guardiola said Tottenham, Chelsea or even fifth-placed Manchester United could not be ruled out.
City lead the table on goal difference from Liverpool, with both sides 12 points clear of Chelsea.
"I think we will be able to fight for the top four this season. No more, I think," Sarri said at his pre-match press conference on Friday (Feb 8) ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium.
"We can win something of course, but in the Premier League there is a fight between Liverpool and Man City. At the moment Man City is the best team in Europe."
Sarri was also asked again about Eden Hazard, saying he wanted the Belgium forward to be "happy" wherever his future lies as speculation continues to swirl over a potential move.
Hazard this week admitted to having made a decision on his future, with his Chelsea contract expiring in June 2020 and amid repeated links with a move to Real Madrid.
"I speak every day with Eden, but I speak with Eden about his position on the pitch," said Sarri.
"I will be really very happy with him if he will want to stay because in my opinion he's the best in Europe.
"But it's up to him, I think. I want to see him happy. And so, he has to decide."
Sarri has previously suggested he does not expect Hazard's decision to be known until the end of the season.
The Chelsea boss and Guardiola share a mutual admiration for their similar playing styles, but Sarri said they tend to pick former AC Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi's brains when they meet socially rather than sharing their own secrets.
"We have a good relationship. Very, very good," Sarri said.
"Usually during the summer we have dinner together. I hope he speaks very well about me as a coach, as a friend.
"Usually we learn from Arrigo Sacchi. Because Arrigo is always with us. So it's very interesting to speak to Arrigo."

Football: Even if they come on for just five minutes, I trust the player will give 100 per cent, says Nazri Nasir
SINGAPORE - There is no secret in motivating footballers. Just one simple word - trust.
It captures Nazri Nasir's management philosophy and what he tried to instil during his short stint in charge of Singapore during March's AirMarine Cup in Malaysia.
The former national captain said: "I fully believe in them. I told them when you're selected to be part of this team, it's because I trust you.
"When they're called on in the game, even if it's just five minutes, I trust that they will give their 100 per cent and when they're given a chance, they will do well."
The Lions, their morale low after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of last November's AFF Suzuki Cup, responded with some creditable performances at the friendly quadrangular tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
They beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties.
Nazri, 48, who was recently appointed assistant to new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida, said: "They responded to me very well and I always try to win the players' trust, that's the most important thing and it showed during the AirMarine Cup.
"I hope they can continue the momentum and that's where I come in also to motivate the players.
"That was a good experience for me to get to know the players better. Now, I can help him (Yoshida) get to know them as well by sharing their mentality, strengths and weaknesses.
"With his coaching ideas and me as I can interact with players easily and understand them better, these will blend together to build a good chemistry in the team."

He and Yoshida face their first test as a partnership in the coming days. The Republic, ranked 160th, face the Solomon Islands (world No. 139) and Myanmar (140) on Saturday (June 8) and next Tuesday (June 11).
The upcoming friendlies at the National Stadium were arranged to help Singapore gain crucial Fifa ranking points for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun said Nazri, who skippered the Lions to victory at the 1998 AFF Championship, is an important presence in the national set-up.
Hariss noted:"His role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches. He also has a lot of experience to impart and with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs (Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu), we need to adapt as fast as we can.
"Our results at the AirMarine Cup gave us a lot of confidence so we just have to try to continue that momentum. We have a new coach too so the boys are eager to show what we have and I hope this will translate to a good performance in the coming games."
After Nazri retired in 2008, he joined his former club Tampines Rovers as general manager and was later an assistant coach for the now-defunct LionsXII and Young Lions.
He said: "Yoshida brings different ideas and playing styles. He's very detailed and requires high intensity.
"He wants to bring Singapore to a higher level and with his guidance and my local experience, I'm sure we can help the team improve. "

We look for answers everywhere but within ourselves, for this is what we know how to do, this is what we were taught, this is what we were raised to believe. We spend most of our time looking outside ourselves for all the answers to our questions, not understanding that we already possess within ourselves all that we need.

Football: Salah penalty sends 'mature' Liverpool seven points clear again
BRIGHTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed his side's maturity as Premier League contenders after breaking down an obdurate Brighton thanks to Mohamed Salah's 50th-minute penalty in a 1-0 win on Saturday (Jan 12).
Klopp's men had lost their last two games in very contrasting fashion as Manchester City inflicted Liverpool's only Premier League defeat of the campaign nine days ago before a much-changed side lost in the FA Cup to Wolves.
Liverpool were far from their fluent best on England's south coast, but ground out a vital win to move seven points clear of City at the top of the table thanks to a 13th clean sheet in 22 league games this season.
"The headline before the game was 'be ready', the headline after the game is 'very mature'," said Klopp.
"It's so important. On the good days everybody can win; on average days not a lot of teams can win football games and, on a bad day, only a few can win.
"Today was not a bad day but it was a difficult day because Brighton is doing really well."
Salah was just one a number of first-team regulars to return from Monday's defeat by Wolves, but the Egyptian and the rest of Liverpool's forward line were starved of service before the break as Brighton sat deep and the visitors dominated possession without any cutting edge.
"It was very hard but that is how it is," added Klopp.
"I liked the performance. It wasn't an opera of football but it was a really nice song."
Salah immediately signalled a change in Liverpool's intent after half-time as his powerful shot at the end of a purposeful run was well saved by David Button.
Brighton, though, were architects of their own downfall moments later. Salah was given too much room inside the area to turn and Pascal Gross then hauled down last season's Premier League player of the year.
"I feel for Pascal because Mo Salah is probably the most dangerous player once he gets in those positions one on one," said Brighton boss Chris Hughton, who had no complaints over the penalty award.
Salah stepped up to blast the penalty past Button and move level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane as the league's top-scorer on 14 goals for the season.
One moment of madness from Gross undid Hughton's gameplan to defend and frustrate the league leaders.
Yet, the German midfielder had a chance to make amends almost immediately with Brighton's best opportunity to level, but his shot was bravely blocked by Fabinho.
From then on Liverpool looked more likely to add to their lead than concede as Firmino's fierce strike from outside the box was placed too close to Button before Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane fired wide.
Salah passed up a glorious chance two minutes from time when he turned James Milner's driven cross wide from point-blank range.
That could have proved costly when Florin Andone escaped in behind the Liverpool defence in stoppage time, but his low cross found no takers.
And Liverpool held out to ensure a largely forgettable 90 minutes could be remembered as another important step on course to the title come May.

Football: Ambitious Hougang United show title promise, but face tough start in Tampines Rovers
SINGAPORE - In six months, Hougang United have transformed themselves from wooden spoonists to dark horses for the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title.
The Cheetahs, boosted by several key signings in the off-season, face an immediate test of their title credentials in their opener - five-time champions Tampines Rovers.
To boost a blunt forward line, which saw just 22 goals in 24 games last year, they have reunited Singapore international Faris Ramli and Croatian striker Stipe Plazibat.
The duo plundered 58 goals in all competitions for Home United in 2017 before spending last season abroad at separate clubs.
They have also brought in other Lions like Hafiz Abu Sujad and Afiq Yunos, and re-signed Zulfahmi Arifin after his one season with Thai side Chonburi.
The moves have had some touting Hougang as title contenders.
It is quite a turnaround, considering that Hougang were last in the nine-team SPL last year and have never finished in the top half of the league.
Their best results were finishing runners-up in the League Cup in 2007 and 2011.
Head coach Clement Teo is confident of ending the barren run, saying: "Looking at the players we have, we know we can win silverware. But we are also aware that no games have been played yet.
"On paper, yes, we look fantastic and I have no doubt about my players' capabilities. What we need to do now is to get them to work together, on and off the field."
The club have failed to deliver on pre-season hype before.
In 2016, they signed the league's reigning Player of the Year Fumiya Kogure, only to end up sixth out of nine teams. A year later, they roped in Philippe Aw, who built a stylish Home United team over two seasons and brought with him two key men, Zulfahmi and Azhar Sairudin. Again, the Cheetahs finished sixth.
While Teo is bullish this year will be different, he expects a difficult start against Tampines, and terms his team firm underdogs for the tie.
Tampines, seen by some as favourites for the SPL crown, thrashed defending champions Albirex Niigata 4-0 in a friendly two weeks ago, and then won 3-1 at Myanmar league and Cup champions Yangon United in the AFC Cup last Tuesday.
Tampines' strongest XI are almost unchanged from last season. Hougang midfielder Fabian Kwok says that while this consistency is beneficial, he believes that Hougang are better equipped against strong teams this term.
"Last year, we had good players and were competitive in many games," said the 29-year-old, who has been with Hougang since 2017.
"But we lacked the experience, and often lost by one goal to the top teams. This year, we've signed players who are established and they bring that experience we need."
Plazibat, who scored 25 league goals in 22 games for Home in 2017, stressed that the best chance of victory today is through their strength as a unit.
"We are aware of our capabilities (as players) but individual players don't guarantee you anything, you need a team," said the 29-year-old.
"We are very serious about wanting to start the season on a high, because it will be very difficult later on if we don't collect points early.
"My target this season is to win (silverware) with the team. If I score many goals along the way, that's a bonus."

Manchester City moved to the top of the league on Wednesday (Feb 6) for the first time since December after Klopp's side limped to back-to-back draws against Leicester City and West Ham United.
However, Klopp has dismissed the notion that Liverpool are wilting under the pressure of bidding for their first top division title in 29 years.

"Is it interesting for me? Not really, but obviously the view from outside is completely different.

SINGAPORE - Ikhsan Fandi's rich vein of scoring form continues as the Singapore striker found the net in his third consecutive match for second-tier Norwegian club Raufoss IL in just 11 days.
On Wednesday (May 22), the 20-year-old opened the scoring at third-tier Fram Larvik in the 33rd minute of the second-round Norwegian Football Cup tie.
Capitalising on the uncertainty within the Fram defence, Ikhsan clinically chipped the goalkeeper to give Raufoss the lead.
However, the hosts equalised in the 88th minute and after a goal-less 30 minutes of extra time, Fram emerged 4-3 winners from the penalty shootout after Ikhsan and Anton Henningsson missed the fourth and fifth spot-kicks respectively.
While Ikhsan was upset about the penalty miss, he took comfort in the fact that he completed his first full match for Raufoss and kept up his scoring streak.
He had grabbed his first competitive goal for Raufoss on May 12 with an 89th-minute bicycle-kick winner in the 3-2 victory over Skeid, before scoring his second with a towering header in the 5-2 defeat by Sandnes Ulf four days later.
He told The Straits Times: "This is my first 120-minute game and I'm exhausted. I'm happy to be in such good form because I've been working hard and I will do my best to keep scoring.

"I was shocked with the finish because it wasn't typical of me to finish this way, but I just reacted instinctively when I saw the defenders waiting and staring at the ball after losing possession, and went for the chip.
"For the penalty, I placed my shot to the right but the goalkeeper read me. We are disappointed to lose the match but we just have to focus on helping the team do as well as possible in the league now."
Ikhsan had started and played 45 minutes of the first-round match against Toten, which Raufoss won 5-2 after extra time. He also featured in seven league games this season, all as a substitute, and his two league goals have come from just 127 minutes of action.
He will now focus on recovering from the cup exertions and hope he has done enough to earn a first league start in Sunday's away league match at second-from-bottom Notodden.
Raufoss are currently sixth - and within the four playoff spots behind the top-two automatic promotion slots - in the 16-team league with 13 points from eight games.

Football: Spurs' Pochettino recalls how he cheered United counterpart Solskjaer's 1999 Champions League final goal
LONDON - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed on Friday morning (Jan 11) that he was among the 90,245 fans who packed Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium in 1999 to watch Manchester United's fabled 2-1 Champions League final win over Bayern Munich.
And while he insisted he was a neutral - he was a player at Espanyol then - the 46-year-old Argentinian admitted he was thrilled when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winning goal deep in injury time.
Pochettino and Solskjaer will be opposite each other on the touchline when Spurs take on United in their Premier League clash at Wembley on Sunday.
"I have good memories (of Solskjaer) because I was there in Camp Nou with Toni Jimenez (former Espanyol teammate) who is now my goalkeeping coach, when he scored after 90 minutes," said the Spurs manager.
"And how I shouted at the goal of Manchester United was unbelievable. We were neutrals watching a fantastic game... so I have good memories of him from 20 years ago, and now we are going to play United at Wembley."
Sunday's clash promises to be an exciting affair between two in-form teams.
Spurs have won nine of their last 11 games in all competitions, with the only defeat being a surprise 3-1 reverse at home to Wolves.
Â
Â
United, meanwhile, under the charge of caretaker manager Solskjaer, have won five in a row after sacking Jose Mourinho.
Pochettino said he was predicting a tough game that would be "very nice to watch", and declined to say what he felt had changed about United since Mourinho left.
"I have huge respect for Mourinho and Solskjaer, and I cannot talk about what happened (at United)," he said.
"I can only judge the team today, and they are in very good form. To win five games, you build your confidence and self-belief, and ego too. We are going to compete in our best way, I am sure, and it will be tough."

Pulisic aims to be next Hazard
LONDON • Christian Pulisic has said that he wants to make the same impact that Eden Hazard has had at Chelsea and hopes to play alongside the Belgium superstar at Stamford Bridge.
The US international signed a 5½-year contract with Maurizio Sarri's team in January but was immediately loaned backed to Germany to finish the season at Borussia Dortmund.
"It is incredible to see what Eden can do," attacking midfielder Pulisic, 20, told the BBC. "He (Hazard) is a guy to look up to and what I would love to become.
"It is definitely a goal. Any player would be dumb not to want to be in the same team as him."
But the £58 million (S$101.2 million) signing appears unlikely to get his wish, with the Chelsea star linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The Belgian forward said earlier this month that he has made a decision on his future. Any announcement of a deal with Real, however, is likely to be delayed until the conclusion of the Europa League final against Arsenal next Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Pulisic, who scored four times in 20 league appearances last season as Dortmund finished second to Bayern Munich, said he wanted to inspire young American footballers.
"I don't want to be looked at as someone who is the youngest to do this or that," said Pulisic, who is both the youngest player to captain the United States and to score for them in a World Cup qualifier.
"I just want to be an established player and someone people respect, who is successful in this league. It is completely new to me and something not a lot of American players have experienced."
Pulisic spent part of his childhood in England and relished the football culture.
"I soon realised how much people over here loved the game. To be in that culture and get thrown right in just grew my passion even more," he said.
"Every day after school I was on the court playing. I would go to games with my dad, including one at Chelsea. I don't remember how old I was but it would have been around the time Jose Mourinho was there.
"The fans were screaming and yelling. The atmosphere was fantastic. I had never seen anything like it."
Pulisic would likely have seen Petr Cech in action then and it was reported on Tuesday that the goalkeeper will return to the Blues as sporting director when he retires from playing after the Europa League final, according to Sky Sports and other British media.
The 37-year-old Arsenal goalkeeper responded to the reports by tweeting: "Despite the news today as I had already said to everybody before, I'll make (a) decision about my future after the last game. Now my sole focus is to win the EL with @Arsenal."
Chelsea were not immediately available to comment on the media reports.
Former Czech Republic international Cech, who won 124 caps, spent 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League and Europa League, four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups before moving to the Gunners in 2015.
He had previously announced that he would retire from playing at the end of this season.

Football: Resurgent Valencia inflict ninth La Liga defeat on Real Madrid
VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Real Madrid's harrowing campaign continued as they fell to a ninth defeat in La Liga and their first since coach Zinedine Zidane returned as they were deservedly beaten 2-1 away by a resurgent Valencia on Wednesday (April 3).
Portugal international Goncalo Guedes fired Valencia into the lead in the 35th minute with a thumping shot from inside the area which was too powerful for Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Madrid had played well until conceding, but lost momentum after the goal and Valencia continued to threaten into the second half, finally doubling their lead with a header by defender Ezequiel Garay from a corner in the 83rd.
Karim Benzema headed in a consolation goal for Madrid in stoppage time, shortly after Zidane's side had a penalty decision overturned after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled Sergio Ramos was offside.
Madrid are stuck in third on 57 points, 13 behind La Liga leaders Barcelona and five behind city rivals Atletico Madrid.
Valencia, who have reached the Copa del Rey final and the quarter-finals of the Europa League, have Champions League qualification in their sights after climbing up to fifth in the table on 46 points, one behind fourth-placed Getafe.
The win extended their unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions, their longest stretch without defeat in their 100-year history.
"We know that this has been a difficult year and we are working hard to make sure we come back stronger next season and I'm sure we will," Madrid midfielder Casemiro told reporters.
"We were in control for the first half then they scored and got more confident. We worked hard in the second half and tried to get back in the game but goals are what count. This defeat is difficult for us, we know we are not doing well but we must keep working."
It was Zidane's first away game since returning to the club after Santiago Solari was sacked last month, having won his first two games back against Celta Vigo and Huesca.
As he had promised ahead of the match, the Frenchman made sweeping changes from the team that had beaten Huesca, bringing back seven players including Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Navas as Isco and Gareth Bale dropped to the bench.
Madrid dominated the early stages but could not turn their possession to chances and once Valencia took the lead through Guedes they rarely looked like letting it slip.
Marcelino's side missed a gilt-edged chance to seal victory when Kevin Gameiro attempted a backheel pass towards Carlos Soler when it would have been easier to shoot at goal.
But Argentine Garay made up for his team mate's wastefulness by effectively sealing the points with a towering header from captain Dani Parejo's corner.
FULHAM 0 WEST HAM 2. Dec 15 (Reuters) - West Ham won their fourth successive Premier League game to add to Fulham's woes at Craven Cottage on Saturday, beating their cross-London rivals 2-0 with goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio.

Football: Stunning free kick sends Qatar into Asian Cup quarter-finals
ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Qatar wrestled their way past Iraq into the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 22) when a stunning free kick from the son of a former Iraqi international gave them a 1-0 victory at Al Nahyan Stadium.
Defender Bassam Al-Rawi, whose father Hisham played for Iraq in the 1990s, found the net in the 62nd minute to decide a scrappy contest in favour of the 2022 World Cup hosts and set up a date with South Korea across town at Zayed Sports City on Friday.
Iraq, the 2007 champions, gave their all but paid the price for failing to take their chances and departed the continental tournament before the quarter-final stage for the first time since 1972.
Because of the current political and economic rift between the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, Iraq were cheered on by a noisy majority of the 14,000 crowd in the boutique ground, with barely a handful supporting the Maroons.
Qatar, who scored 10 goals and conceded none in the group stage, made the brighter start and left back Abdelkarim Hassan hit the bar in the fourth minute.
That was pretty much the extent of their threat on goal until he had a shot deflected onto the post just before the break, though, as the Qataris were muscled out of the game in midfield.
Iraq fared little better at the other end with Mohanad Ali having their best chance of breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute as the 2007 champions started to make some progress with the ball over the top of the Qatari defence.
The young striker raced through on goal but Saad Al Sheeb bravely dived at his feet, with the goalkeeper getting a boot to the face for his efforts.
A defensive error put Qatar winger Akram Afif through early in the second half but his touch woefully betrayed him, and the ball trickled harmlessly to Iraq keeper Jalal Hassan.
It was a foul on the dangerous Afif on the lefthand corner of the box that led to the breakthrough just after the hour mark, Bassam stepping up and curling the ball over the wall and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
The Qataris were charged with confidence by the goal and poured forward to pepper Hassan's goal with shots in the next 10 minutes before Iraq regained their grip on the midfield.
Iraq defender Ali Adnan went close to matching Bassam's effort from a free kick slightly further out in the 78th minute and twice Iraqi forwards flashed headers wide as they lay siege to the Qatar goal in the last few minutes.
But the Qataris held them out to register a fourth clean sheet in four matches at the tournament, almost outnumbering their small band of fans when they celebrated with them at the end.

SINGAPORE - First visits third in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) on Friday night (May 24) at the Jurong East Stadium, and both sides will be counting on the two most in-form players in the league to sparkle again.
League leaders Brunei DPMM will rely on Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto - winner of the SPL's player of the month and goal of the month awards for April - while Albirex will turn to playmaker and skipper Kyoga Nakamura.
Nakamura, the SPL's best young player in April, has scored braces in each of the White Swans' last two games.
Their individual brilliance might well be needed on Friday given that the first meeting between the two teams this season on March 15 was a tight affair that ended goalless. Both coaches have their opposing dangermen well-scouted.
Said Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi: "I think (Ricciuto) is a good player. His strengths are his height and strength, and he has good momentum too."
The 1.80m, 81kg midfielder Ricciuto, 26, has scored six goals in 10 games this season, with five of them coming in the last six matches. DPMM coach Adrian Pennock hailed his star for his boundless stamina.
"He has fantastic energy, and for a centre midfielder he really gets around the pitch," said the English coach of his Aussie import, who last played for New South Wales-based semi-professional side Rockdale City Suns.
Â
"The other thing about Blake is his character. He's got a very good head on his shoulders, and that's very important coming into a new country, new league, and new culture.
"I didn't want my import players to take 10 games to settle - by then it'd be nearly half the season gone - and the fact Blake is scoring goals and looking very dangerous hasn't surprised me."
Ricciuto's goals have helped DPMM to an unbeaten start to the season, picking up 26 points from 10 games. Albirex have 17 points from nine games.
Former Stoke City assistant manager Pennock noted Albirex have their own goalscoring midfield star Nakamura.
The 23-year-old, who played for Japan in the Under-17 World Cup in 2013, scored the first and last goals in a 4-0 win over Home United, before scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Geylang International. He last played in the third tier of Japan with YSCC Yokohama.
"I think he's a lovely footballer, and I like watching him," said Pennock.
"His balance is very good, he's got a wonderful left foot, and he's one of the best players in the league.
"Obviously, he's a danger, but there are 10 other players we have to worry about as well because Albirex are a very good side."
Shigetomi believes there is more to come from his skipper, saying: "He is still getting used to the physical demands of the SPL."
Pennock will miss four players on Friday - the trio of Nur Ikhwan Othman, Azwan Ali, and Abdul Azizi Ali are suspended, while Hendra Azam remained in Brunei for the birth of his child - but is still confident of pushing Albirex again.
"The first game (in March) was very tough, we played the last 40 minutes with 10 men (after the sending off of Najib Tarif)," he said.
"But I was very pleased with the boys and how they played in that situation against last year's champions.
"With four players out, tomorrow will be a very hard game for us, but we know it's not the end of the world if we lose, and there are still a lot of games to play. We've put ourselves in a good position, and the most important thing is for the boys to show up and perform."

Football: Emotional breakdown as Japan stun imploding Iran at Asian Cup
AL-AIN, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (AFP) – Japan cashed in on a defensive mix-up and a controversial penalty as they stunned favourites Iran 3-0 in the Asian Cup semi-finals to move one win away from their fifth title on Monday (Jan 28).Â
Yuya Osako put Japan 1-0 up after half-time when the Iranian defence fatally stopped to remonstrate with the referee, and then stroked home the penalty awarded after a replay for Morteza Pouraliganji’s accidental hand ball.Â
Genki Haraguchi then scored in stoppage time to complete a rout which had been wholly unexpected against a free-scoring Iran side which had banged in 12 unanswered goals en route to the semis. It was the last hurrah for Iran’s long-serving coach Carlos Queiroz, who is leaving the team after nearly eight years at the helm, a reign that has included two World Cups.
Queiroz said the “innocent mistake†that led to the opening goal, when players surrounded the referee as Japan played on and scored, “destroyed (them) emotionallyâ€.Â
“My players stopped and everyone was expecting the referee to take action for that incident,†he said, referring to a challenge on Takumi Minamino on the edge of the box. “That moment created an emotional breakdown for my team and after that there was only one team on the pitch.â€
Eleven minutes later, Minamino’s cross hit Pouraliganji’s arm as he slid in, but Australian referee Chris Beath blew for the penalty and stood by his decision after watching a replay. Osako stroked home the spot-kick to give Japan a 2-0 lead with 23 minutes to play, and there was no coming back for Iran whose 43-year wait for a fourth Asian title goes on.Â
“My players had good preparation and showed great fighting spirit. They played as underdogs,†said Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu, whose team will play Qatar or hosts the United Arab Emirates in Friday’s final.Â
“I’m happy they showed that spirit and fight, and delivered a win for the fans back home.â€
Queiroz’s Iran have been the form team of the Asian Cup but they lacked ideas on Monday against a calm Japanese team who seized their opportunities.
At a rocking Hazza Bin Stadium, Iran lobbed balls at target man Sardar Azmoun at every opportunity but it was Japan who looked the biggest threat in the opening exchanges. Captain Maya Yoshida headed over and Ritsu Doan saw a shot trickle wide as the Blue Samurai were anything but cowed by the physical Iran presence.Â
However, Shuichi Gonda had to be sharp to keep out Azmoun from a tight angle – after the goalkeeper had gifted Iran possession with a botched clearance. The game was on a knife-edge but a major misjudgement from the Iranian defence tilted it decisively Japan’s way 11 minutes after half-time.Â
While five players were protesting Hossein Kanani’s innocence over his tackle on Minamino, the forward got up and crossed to Osako, whose glancing header put Japan ahead.Â
It was a body-blow for Iran, but worse was to come when Pouraliganji was adjudged to have handled in the box, a decision that could have gone either way.Â
Osako stuck it away to all but silence the Iranian support, who then had to watch as Haraguchi stole in for the third goal to make it a lopsided victory for Japan.Â
Japan will be buoyed by their best performance of the tournament so far, and with a 100 percent record they shape as formidable opponents in Friday’s final.

Football: Klopp charged by FA over referee comments in West Ham draw
LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was charged by the English Football Association (FA) on Wednesday (Feb 13) over comments he made about the referee after his side's 1-1 draw with West Ham United in the Premier League on Feb 4.
The German manager said referee Kevin Friend's performance was affected by the decision to allow Sadio Mane's opening goal, which should have been ruled out for offside.
The FA said Klopp had been charged as the comments "questioned the integrity of the referee and/or implied bias".
West Ham equalised through Michail Antonio's goal before the interval but Klopp said Friend "did not want to open the gap any more" in the second half.
"As a human being, if I know I have made a big mistake in the first half, I don't want to open the gap any more," Klopp said after the match at the London Stadium.
"Referees are obviously human beings, and I understand that, but I didn't during the game because I had no clue that our goal was offside."
Klopp has until 1800 GMT on Monday (2am on Tuesday, Singapore time) to respond to the charge.

Unai Emery admits Arsenal's 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace was very frustrating but he tried to sound an optimistic note ahead of Wednesday's game with Wolves.. The Gunners starting lineup, heavily rotated by the Spaniard, struggled to cope with the visitors from the off and found themselves 1-0 down when Christian Benteke scored for the first time since fire was invented.
